I went round my mates house the other day and he told me about something that happened that was unexplainable for him and me.

What happened was he said there was a bright light that filled his window for about three seconds, nothing strange there could have been a car or lightning. But it hadn't rained when I got up 30 mins later at 4.45am to go to the F1 it was dry and for a cars lights to go into his room the car would have to be turning in the road, which is pretty unlikely because the road is quiet and very tight to turn in.

But the thing that was weird is that he said that when he tried to use the internet on his phone (3g) it wouldn't work and told me he has never had problems before connecting to the internet in his house...

He then said he turned on his TV and said the colours were messed up??

He isn't a person to make up a story and he also said that someone else in the house was woken up because his dog got scared and started barking.

Anyone got any ideas?

no. not me.but I beleive you somehow .but you know many people in this threat are going to say "just a coincedince" or "is June 22nd the new april fool's day?" or "bigfoot with a lightsaver". I'm not going to say any of that but umm......what do you expect? Ghost, Extra Terestrial? I dont know..

I know how far fetched this sounds, but people, who are supposedly been abducted by aliens, yes intelligent extraterestrial people, claim they experience exactly this, when the abduction is about to occur.

So what you're telling me is that a transformer blew out - interfering with the TV, and taking out the internet connection he was using to connect his iphone to via WiFi. Without the WiFi, suddenly the reception sucks. Transformers fry occasionally, and the light show is quite dramatic. I've seen this happen a few times.

Either that or aliens.... nah prolly aliens.

I've got a transformer in my back yard. Yeah, they blow every now and then. It doesn't necessarily make a lot of noise either.

Bumblebee or Optimus?

No wait... Arcee.

Doesn't she have a silent mode?

:trouble:👍

Nice.

I can say for certain that I have personally experienced a transformer blowing, and it's quite the amazing. For a little bit there I was quite disoriented and maybe even a little scared. But by the end I was just enjoying the experience.

The downside is that usually when that happens, you have to service the transformer - which can be a laborious and difficult task.

Uh, they make quite a bit of noise when they explode. A favorite family pastime from back in the day was to see the flash, then guess how many seconds it would be before the boom...and our lights going out.

Do we have pole-mounted transformers in the UK? - i don't ever recall seing one.

Actually, yes. There was one about 40 feet from my bedroom window, across railway lines, when I was a kid.

It got struck by lightning once. That was quite a sight. And sound.

3G is not WiFi. However, lightning could have created some interference with his cellular connection. I can have 5 bars of voice and no 3G or full 3G but no voice without lightning.

Best guess, lightning hit a cellular tower nearby, which is why he didn't hear much, if anything while indoors.

And yes, lightning can hit without rain.

A "Positive Giant" is a lightning strike that hits the ground up to 20 miles away from the storm. Because it seems to strike from a clear sky it is known as "A Bolt From The Blue". These "Positive Giant" flashes strike between the storm's top "anvil" and the Earth and carry several times the destructive energy of a "regular" lightning strike

In fact, one of these Positive Giants could have passed miles overhead and struck miles away. The atmospheric interference would explain the 3G problem.

Based on the source, I'm not sure we can make the assumption that WiFi was not the primary source of internet.

It is a 3G connection because his phone the LG viewty doesn't have WIFI.

Foolkiller's is an interesting thought that would explain everything but its quite rare to get lightning round here and it normally wakes me up when we do have it...

Thanks for all the answers!

Could also be heat-lightning. We get it down here and sometimes it can light up the land like a giant flashbulb for relatively long periods of time. I remember one time we had it so exposed at night that it was like the sun was out and had turned blue in color for about 4 seconds.

And then the TV and phone signals could just be coincidence, or perhaps the lightning was messing with the cellular/satellite signals.
