Gravity broke the G4 I had a while back (the power supply fell on it. It was not my fault. Was not was not was not. ). Broke a small 4-position 22 ohm resistor array on the back of the chipset.

So I pulled a replacement resistor off this old Soyo board I had sitting around. Broke the Apple board beyond repair trying to solder the new resistor onto it. So now I had two dead boards. I figured that since the Soyo was now dead anyhow, I might as well take the northbridge and southbridge off it and use them as keychains...

Now, the nb and sb are bga packages, and the only way to get them off is to melt all the solder balls on the underside of the chip at once... There are only two ways I can think of to do this; a heat gun or a blowtorch. I didn't have a heat gun sitting around, so I took my blowtorch to the back of the board instead...

oh damn i was looking forward to a monster overclock story :P

i'm currently in the middle of making a dead xp1800+ into a keychain, man it takes a long time to take off 400 something pins with pliers :P

Nice. 👍

I'll do that when my board dies.

I noticed you live in Stockton. It's only about an hour from here.

Polytopic? Does that have anything to do with polygamy? (mind in the gutter? who, me? nah...)

To answer the question:

San Diego is 300 or 400 miles from Stockton.

456.9 miles from Stockton, according to maps.yahoo.com... about 6hrs including gas stops if you don't want to risk getting stuck with a nice, bigass ticket courtesy of big brother...

Yeah, the CHP will get you, if you don't watch out.

I remember one time I drove down to LA, we followed a guy in a Camaro with a radar detector on his dash.

Invincible! :)

Nice .. too bad those are illegal in VA :(.

Thats my favorite part of the story. Just something about the burn spots that keeps me laughing too.

Nice burn spots. I'm not letting you near my computer even if you did make them removing the northbridge and the southbridge from that motherboard. 👍

You'd better hope Sage doesn't see this thread... I'm still an Apple fan, mind you, but in a smaller way with my iPod.

rofl.

The G4 wasn't a bad system for the month it survived... however, it was slower than all hell in OSX. I mean it was slow beyond comprehension. Easily the slowest system I've ever used, even though it had a good 640MB of RAM and a flashed Radeon 8500. OSX is just more OS than a 450MHz G4 can handle. I have no doubt that on OS9 or whatever it originally came with, it was a damn fast system- I did some unofficial benchmarking with SETI and a 450MHz G4 does do about as well in that test as a 600MHz P3 would. However, SETI is not a comprehensive benchmark as it only measures FPU performance.

At any rate, I'll just pick up another sawtooth board this summer and throw a 1GHz+ CPU upgrade (possibly a dual CPU upgrade) and a gig of RAM in it, and it should run OSX quite nicely.
