What are pits for?

I've only been playing Enthusia for a few days now, so bear with me please.

I'm seeing pit lanes on many of the tracks. Do they become functional at any point in the game, or are they just for show?

(Not the deepest of questions, I know, but I was just wondering.)

I've never used them, and i'm in the RS races. As far as I know, you drive through some of them during Driving Revolution, but are otherwise unused.

Tsukuba is the only track that allows you to drive through the pit lane.

And as Thirdeye said, none of the pits are ever used.
