I dont have a credit card, and the lady at my bank advises against using my debit card for online purchases. Can I sign up for paypal using a debit card? What are some other options for online purchases? I wont be buying anything huge, and the items will be from reputable vendors. The paypal website doesnt say anything about debit cards, just linking to a bank account.

The thing with debit cards vs. credit cards is the recovery procedures under the law are vastly different. Basically they don't exist for debit cards. You use your debit card and get a f'd up transaction and the seller runs with your money, you probably can't do much about it. Basically, the laws that have been in place to protect credit card holders haven't been applied to debit cards.

Paypal adds some level of buyer protection over that, but it's not anything required by law, I don't think. They just have a decent dispute policy.

I'm reviving this thread instead of creating a new one because I have questions about a PayPal account.

How does it exactly work if you link PayPal to your bank account and you pay with your debit card?

If you open a PayPal account, you have to fill in your personal data (name, address etc...). What if a hacker(s) hacks into PayPal and find your personal data? Identity theft? Possible?

Yes possible. You can get PayPal credit and debit cards though. The PayPal debit card debits your paypal and not your bank account.
