When you're experimenting with some of the lower spec non-race cars, and you want to see how they compare to the performance of others in general, and how quick they get (relatively) when you tune them.
Since there is no 0-400m test, and the slow AI gives very little challenge to even quite slow unmodified cars in many races. The career mode in general is just too easy and slow to test a car through the stages from being completely stock through to lightly modified and tuned to the max.
I often do time trials of a smallish track eg Tsukuba to compare lap times.
Lately I've been finding if I can get a car to be competitive in the supercar race, its showing fairly good performance.
A bigger challenge is the 10 lap one at Ascari in the special licence races - which includes tyre wear aswell to add to the comparison. If I can win that with the car I'm testing, its doing well.
I'm curious what methods any of you guys tend to use.
As soon as the course maker comes out, I think I'll just make a 400m test track.
