What do you guys really think of the FT-86?

Im glad Toyota are finally getting back into the affordable sports car game, but i think they have lost the plot with this car.

The ae86 was a cheap, simple car, small engine, no abs, lightweight.

This new car could not be further from this idea, at least thats how i feel, being a diehard ae86 fan.

what do you guys think?

At the time of the AE86 all similar sized hatchbacks/coupes had small engines, no ABS and were relatively lightweight and simple. They were comparatively cheap too. The AE86 wasn't really an original concept, it was just of it's time.

The FT-86 just moves the theme on into modern times, which means more safety measures. This means more weight and therefore more power and more chassis technology required to make it perform as wanted.
 
Yeah, i think cars these days just arent as raw as they use to be.

The orginal 86 was a real drivers car, you know, basic, no frills, really somthing a lot of sports cars these days dont have.

I guess im just stuck in the past. Still, id prefer a 4age over a boxer, simply because they are cheaper to maintain :)
 
I'm not much of a fan of the FT-86, it's just not as special as the past AE86.

I don't understand why they dropped the name 'Trueno'. It would likely cause more sales and make AE86 fans happy if the FT-86 carried that name.
 
If they make it affordable, they'll sell quite a few of them. Honestly, all of the basics are there, they just have to sell it at the right price. That means deciding between making it a Toyota or a Scion in the US, matching it relatively well with its platform-mate sold by Subaru, and so on.

I guess I'll look at it this way: If Toyota can make the car be successful in the US, that means the likelihood of having more affordable RWD products in the future is very good. Ford may do their SVO Mustang, Chevrolet could offer an affordable Alpha coupe, and Honda could do a reasonable S2000 successor.

A lot of good can come from the car assuming that it was good in the first place.
