I was mowing my girlfriends lawn the other day when it ran out of fuel. It's an old two-stroke honda lawnmower. On the cap it reads 25:1. As I've only ever used 4-Stroke Mowers, I've never had to do that petrol/oil mix I'm pretty sure 2-strokes need. What type of oil or whatever gets mixed in with the fuel?

Go to home depot

in the aisle you get the lawnmowers is something called 2-stroke oil, you mix it in the gas can as the mower says it is needed yours I guess is 25:1. gas to oil

If you don't (this is actually experience talking) the mower will eventually become FUBAR and will cease to work permanently if you put in too much it will smoke up, and if you didn't put enough in it will burn up the motor. I think it's easier to clean out the motor than it is to replace the motor, but if all else fails just look on the bottle the 2-stroke oil came in and it usually gives a suggested ratio for oil to gas.

Ok cool, so there is actually a specific '2-stroke oil' to look for. She has all kinds of other oil in her shed like transmission oil and the regular car oil but I wasn't sure if I could mix that.

With the ratio given on the cap, it's a simple matter of going to the gas station with an empty 1 gallon gas can. Get 1 gallon of gas add a bottle of the proper 2-stroke mix, Mix well and viola! you are good to go.

I prefer to put the oil in first and then pump the gas. As the fuel flows in it'll mix the oil so you don't have to shake it all over the place.

But yeah. You can buy 2 stroke oil pretty much any auto parts or hardware store.

It might also be called 2 cycle oil.

I think I saw some at Target the other day. I have to check on that when I get back to work.

Almost every place has 2 stroke oil. If the place has an automotive area they will probably have 2 stroke oil.

check Petrol Stations, too. i know ours tend to carry two stroke oil in stock (having Amish where I am, they have to). although 25:1 oil is a new one on me...I usually see 50:1 up here.

:odd: Have the Amish started using chainsaws or something?

whada you mean STARTED? hell, they specialize in SUPERTUNING them!
apparently, you've only seen the Old Order guys. the guys up here are Moderates, and use sideshaft engines to run their water pumps, washing machines (they convert your grammas old wringers), and Milkhouses. the moo you put on your cereal or in your coffee in the morning might come from some very hardworking hands that belong to a 6 or 8 year old that milks 40 cows before eating breakfast!

this is what I've been doing for a living for the past five years, getting these guys to work cutting up or down the wood things still get built with. heck, I've had a guaranteed christmas present in the form of pure yummy for 5 years.
they're proud of their 800-1000 dollar chainsaws, they port and polish, balance, and racing exhaust the things!

I lol'd at this for a bit and though it that you got butter or milk. But, I believe that he still thinks that the Amish still run really low on technology. I, myself has not seen any Amish a good while.
