I had an early love affair with the Bugatti EB110, Jaguar XJ220, and Ferrari F40 of the 90s as a child. There wasn't much interest in them beyond that, but when a new kid joined my class of grade 6 who was OBSESSED with them, his passion sort of rubbed off on me when we became friends.

I think there's a little more to this thread than posting a simple explanation. For me, it's very nostalgic—I dreamt about some of the cars mentioned above, I thought they were the most beautiful creations on earth (and in the mid 90's, who was going to argue with that?). I was always more interested in the vastly superior technology applied to them than how they drove (until recently).

for me it was a healthy blend of f1, rally, touring cars and rallycross which my dad always let me watch on tv back in the 80's

For me, it was a mix of things that got me to discover racing. Gran Turismo was what first got me to like Cars in '98, then Nascar was the first Series that got me to watch racing in 2000. Two years later, I was just doing some channel surfing when I suddenly discovered Trans am on a Saturday on NBC, then sunday, I saw a car I reconized from GT3, which was the Corvette C5R. I saw this also on NBC during the "Cadillac Grand Prix of washington", the first race that made me discover the American Le Mans Series. GT3 was what also got me to discover JGTC, DTM, WRC, and V8 Supercars. A year later, Courtesy to me whitnessing one of a few wins from Brumos racing with the Porsche Fabcar, I discovered the Rolex Sports Car Series. To this day, I'm still discovering motorsports I didn't hear of like GP2, NASCAR Busch East and West division, the list goes on.
