What happened?

Well here's what happened to me not long ago:

I was arguing with some absolute jerk in an XDCC room on mIRC. One thing led to another and he makes himself an Op. I'm thinking, "Oh great, here we go." SO I say to him, "What are you going to do? Ban me? Pathetic." He replies "No. I'm going to do something a little better than that."

A few seconds later MSN shuts down, Gmail signs out and gets an error, and the Web Page that I'm loading "Cannot be displayed". I disconnected and reconnected several times, and I could connect, I just couldn't browse web pages, or connect to anything at all. I'm currently using my backup connection, but I'm wondering what happened. Did I get hacked?

The one area in Computing that I'm weak in is Hacking, etc. It would be appreciated if someone could tell me just what the hell happened, and how this can be fixed.

Thanks.

Well, he very well could have sent you a packet that opened itself as a virus, (maybe of his own design). I'm not sure as to what you have for security on your pc, but it's extremely possible that you got hacked. Sorry, bud.

Cant you make mIRC give you an accept window before someone sends you something? I would definatly enable that if you can. (If I request somthing ... of course not an illegal file because I dont do that stuff 👍 :sly: It always pops up a window asking me If I want to accept the file)

And I wouldnt bother talking to anyone in an xdcc room, arent those just rooms full of bots made to send files?

See what happens when you really do screw with a l33t h4x0r? :guilty: Sorry to hear it happened though.

Well, I don't think I got hacked, just DOS'd, which means he played around with my computer for a little while. I'm back on my normal connection.

It's mostly filled with Bots, users and the Ops. The Ops are sometimes there, and some rooms use hidden Ops, like I experienced.

It wasn't a packet or a virus at all.

Thanks anyway guys, I've figured it out. 👍

Are you running any software firewalls at the moment?

I recommend ZoneAlarm. 👍

Better safe than sorry.

You know Sun, a firewall would've done nothing against if that was a packet with a virus on it. Since he'd have to of allowed IRC to access the internet, ZA would've just seen geting hacked as downloading a file. Besides that, software firewalls are crap. They're only good for program control. However, someone once said, it's better to have a cheap lock on your back door than no lock at all.

One thing is for sure though, make sure you have AV. 👍

Well, I would have to disagree. ZoneAlarm detects other users IP's trying to access information on your PC, therefore bringing up a popup window with that information, allowing you to block that user. That is, if you have the settings set to do so. I've had users trying to hack my system, and yet, nobody has gotten through that IP scanner.
