What has happened to my laptop?

After getting back upstairs after watching TV, I turned on my laptop, only to find the screen flashing at different colors without opening any program or... well, anything. This is really surreal and I don't understand what has gone wrong this time. What can I do now?

Turn it off and on again?

Sounds like a graphics problem. Does it do this each time you reboot?

Either that or you have a very funky screensaver!

Yeah, could be a built in warning system in your graphics chip, might mean it's on the way out or has been damaged due to heat etc. What is your laptop/what are its specs? Either way, if it's still under warranty, take it into your nearest dealer/shop and get them to have a look at it.

Or, as DQuaN said, your screensaver is awesome sauce.

I don't know any of its specs, but yes, today it has happened twice (inbetween those sessions there was an instance where it did work perfectly, but when I left and later came back, it messed up again).

And I've had it since Christmas 2009. Might be aging. :(

I made a thread a little while ago about what could be a similar problem.

If you find it blinking and making weird colors, try wiggling the screen itself to see if anything changes.
If it changes or makes the issue go away by wiggling the screen, then you might need to get a new set of wires for the screen. For me, I found that a plug just wasn't seated correctly or something. I took mine apart, unplugged all the wires and put them back in. No problems so far.

If it turns out to not be that, it could be a video driver issue. Try updating the drivers for your video card or, if you've done this recently, roll them back to an earlier version.

Hopefully it's nothing major.
Could you post what make and model it is?

I may do that, but only after the night as I'm pretty frustrated with several different things and only need a good sleep right now. I'll check tomorrow...
