RRoD? no thanks.
I've forward my inquiries to two separate mods of the stie and still can't get a straight answer.

May be some members here will have more information on this matter instead.

If a GT5 online series that was posted on GTP have an outside link that solicit registration of a series on another site. Would that be consider advertising? or If that is consider "ok".

My observation of some threads on the GT5 Online section is that it would be consider "ok" by GTP, unless someone tells me otheriwse.

Thanks! 👍

I'd say that would be considered advertising. A quick check shows that we've shut down threads that encouraged people to register with an external website for a racing series - even when that website was created specifically for that series and is therefore its only purpose. As a general rule of thumb, I'd say that if you have any doubts about whether something would be considered advertising, then it probably wil be.

We do not, however, have any objections if you want to run the series - including registration - entirely off the forums.

That would be considered advertising, no question about it.

Without the prior approval of the site owner any thread of that nature would be deleted and the member warned as a minimum.

We have had a number of people sign-up to GTP simply to do this and drive traffic away from here and towards there own sites. In every case the thread has been deleted and if the sign-up reason was solely to do this, the member banned.

Scaff

Couldn't you PM some members about the site? I got one from another site the other day, didn't want to take part though.

That's a dangerous idea. I've already had reports of people using the private message system to try and instigate trades instead of using the Marketplace. If the moderators got wind of it, it would probably be classified as advertising.

I tought the mods could read private messages. Can they? They have to if people are advertising in them.

There are some things that moderators can do that the wider forum community does not know about. And there are some things that adminstrators can do that not even the moderators know about. I'll leave it to your imagination as to exactly what we can and cannot do because I'm not at liberty to divuge the full range of moderator powers.

But rest assured, I think it is safe to say this: if you break the rules, the moderators and adminstrators will find out about it. Don't tempt fate on the chance that we miss it.

Well what I'm saying is I got a PM a couple days ago (deleted, unfortunately) that was from a user who joined to get people to race on his/her site. From what I understand, that was okay for them, or was that PM a form of advertising?

That's not acceptable. Click the "Report PM" button (a yellow sign with an exclamation point in the top right corner of the message) if you see anything like that again and the staff will take care of it.

Jordan, just wondering how come people running the URS and events like that can "get away with it", when I was helping organise the psp wrs we had out own seperate website for that and that wasn't a problem?

I'm not really sure what you're referring to, specifically, but my post was actually in direct response to GT's question about solicitations via Private Message. To summarize, I don't have any problems with anyone using an external site to help them organize or keep track of their competition and its standings - I do have a problem with advertising a competition that will be conducted almost entirely outside of GTPlanet. To be clear, that's not because I'm "afraid" or "worried" about losing "traffic" or posts - I just don't want GTPlanet's online racing community to devolve into an open advertising board for disconnected, poorly run, or mismanaged competitions.

Ahh ok, It just looked like from what some people were saying that they were running driving competitions from here that had outside websites and got in trouble for putting links to them.

Thanks for clearing that up.

URS started in this site and eventually we made our own forums. We still have a social group in these forums as well.We don't really advertise it. We mention it sometimes but we wouldn't make a thread about it or anything like that. If one of you asked about it or asked about a competition, me or most other URS members would tell you but we wouldn't go an advertise by putting a thread in the gt5 forums saying "GT5 competition". That's just plain stupid.

Is this post considered advertsing?

Well the site did promise the winner of one of there series a full year of GTPremium (or something in that way), if I see one again I'll make sure to do something about it.

I don't know why this would be a problem, but for example I'm putting togethor a kart league and have an offsite website, can I advertise for GTPLANET? I know some of them aren't members..
