Yeah, and that's what it used to be. Remember 1993? Toyota made the Camry Wagon, Volvo made a plethora of wagons, Saab made 'em, Honda made one, Subaru made two, Ford, Mercury, BMW... 1993 or thereabouts is when SUV's hit, and it permanently destroyed the SUV segment excepting exactly two station wagons - The Subaru Outback and the Volvo Cross Country/V70. Most of the companies named either severely cut back wagon productions (Ford, Mercury, BMW) or stopped them altogether (Toyota, Honda).
To answer the original question, sport wagons rule. They look good (Protege5), they're supremely functional, especially when compared to sedan counterparts (Aerio SX, Impreza), and they're usually quick (Matrix) and feature-laden (Vibe). What else could you want?
