wanna give us a summary of it which isnt so long winded and technical? :)
 
If you assign a number 1-26 to the letters of the alphabet and write out D Adams with them, add up the numbers you will get 42. But Adams though 42 was the funniest two digit number and that's why 42 is the answer.

The ultimate question can't exsist in the same universe because the universe would disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarrely inexplicable. But it's thought of that it's already happened.

Actually thats a quote right from the pages of the book, which I suggest you read since it's very good. Although you would probably disagree with a lot of it because it makes you think about whether God is real or not.

from what I've heard all references to Oolan Coluphid's subject have been removed from the film script... but that's to be expected with disney :(

I've been an H2G2 fan since before you were born.

The theory goes that both the answer to the ultimate question (of Life, the Universe and Everything) and the actual question itself cannot both be known at the same time, because if ever the purpose of the Universe is discovered it will disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is a second theory which states that this has already happened.


I also love how you try to turn this into science vs. religion AGAIN, despite the fact that what you don't want to try telling me is actually a counter-indicator of religion.

Sorta semi offtopic here _but_ early 80's band Level 42 got their name from H2G2.

If you guys like the Hitchhiker's Guide books, get Red Dwarf, almost as good and just as funny. Pretty much the same style of sci-fi.

Do you know whether the title was already chosen as it refers to the almost extinct animals or was it chosen after Douglas' death?

Wow there is a TV series? Hmm I wonder if it's on the BBC or one of the million channels I get with Direct TV.
 
I don't remember where I got it, it was in a bookstore somewhere. I may have gotten it out of the library. And it was published well before his death, so there's no mystery about the title; he chose it in relation to the animals.

It was originally aired on BBC2. When the 4th series hit, it was moved to BBC1. Series 4-6 were the pinnacle. Series 7 wasn't bad and Series 8 moved back to BBC2 again...

These days it's likely to be on an old BBC re-run channel (it's on UKTV Gold a lot over here). There's also DVDs of seasons 1-6, with season 7 due in November and season 8 in February.

I see, I didn't realise it was published then. I read the book after his death and the title seemed...ironic I guess.
 
Fun on Wikipedia. Note all the funny speculative answers at the end when the explanation for choosing the number was along the lines of "it was a funny smallish number that I thought of. End of story." It also mentions the Google engine knowing 42 to be answer to the great question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
