I've had this knife for quite a while, it's a Smith & Wesson S.W.A.T knife:

Well I use it on a daily bases and I always carry it with me because you never know when you are going to need a knife, yes it's legal to carry the blade is less then 3 inches making it legal in Michigan. I've tried various sharpeners and nothing can give me the edge that I want. Most of the time I use a Master Chef electric kitchen knife sharpener because out of all the methods it gives me a decent edge. I've tried hand sharpeners but either I can't do it correctly or the ones I'm using suck.

This is the hand sharpener I have, I'm just going to assume it sucks.

I'm not sure where to get it professionally sharpened, the place I bought it from went out of business.

I've always used a sharpening stone and some light oil. You should be able to pick one up at any decent hardware store. It takes a little skill and some time (lots of time if it's really dull) but I used to have pocket knives I could shave with.

What I use is a sharpening stone as well, but it is attached to a motor which makes it spinning 👍

It's very simple, you let the stone rotate, gently lay the side of the blade, the part which you're going to sharpen only, not the whole blade, and slightly apply a little bit of pressure on the knife with your other hand 👍 Do it on both sides and it's perfectly sharp again 👍 I don't use anything else since all I'd do is damage the blade and make deep, ugly scratches in to...

If it's really dull, use the Master Chef thing to get it back in the ballpark - it will do a decent job of basic sharpening. Throw that Garden Sharp thing away. Then, as BobK mentions, use a fine whetstone and a few drops of olive oil to put a really keen edge on it. All it takes is some time and a smooth, steady hand.

I bought a diamond knife sharpener yesterday, which looks something like this

I was quite expensive, I think it was $49.99 at a local cookware store, but it put an awesome edge on my knife.

Cool. Those sticks can put a decent edge on things and they're a little easier to use than a traditional rectangular whetstone. Good luck!

All the stick does is realign the edge of your knife. A wetstone will sharpen a dull blade. The stick should be all you need for now until it really gets damaged.
