What is the point of 1000 cars if they are all heavily modified in GT Life races?

One particularly odd change that I've noticed that PD made for GT5 is in the way that the AI car pool is set up. In previous GT games, the AI would choose from a pool of cars that were fairly close to being stock outside of maybe tire choice, give or take 5% or so in horsepower (notable exceptions like the Opel Speedster championship notwithstanding). This system always worked in previous games fine because the sheer variety of cars meant this wasn't an issue (GT3 perhaps being the exception). PD made sure to populate the majority of races with cars of all styles that still managed to be competitive with each other when mostly stock. On certain races, for example, the AI TVR Cerbera would win a race against an AI Dodge Viper, and on other tracks the Viper would win against the Cerbera.

In GT5, though, PD seemed to have tossed this system out and replaced it with this nutty thing where all the AI cars are heavily modified and scaled up (or, in a few particularly notable instances, down) to a certain performance threshold regardless of what the cars are. There isn't much of a comparison to be made to real life cars at all, particularly in stuff like the Supercar Championship where the differences in performance should be more pronounced but instead all of the AI drives mostly the same (except for that idiot who shows up in a C3 Corvette).
And to me, it sort of ruins most of the single player races for me. While I did enjoy tuning up cars so they would be more competitive in races in GT2 and GT4, I also enjoyed taking bone stock cars to races against other mostly stock cars and doing a match of contemporary vehicles (for example, the 80's Cup races in GT2 and GT4 always managed to entertain, but the one in GT5 is just an exercise in dumping cash into a car because you have to to compete). Has anyone else noticed this and felt the same way?

You could always overpower your cars which is most likely why GT now overpowers its cars as well. As the new seasonal events demonstrate, its not just about getting a street car and chucking it into a race, car setup is just as important as driver skill. Just like in real life. Even in strictly controlled motorsports teams spend hours and hours tinkering with things like suspension and downforce to get those extra few seconds off their laptimes.

I wish the AI cars were closer to each other. I mean every race has at least 1 ridiculously fast car, and 1 shamefully slow car. Its like the sole purpose of the game is to try to prevent you from winning, rather than actually having a race and having 12 or so cars trying to win the race.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see the relevance of that to what I said.

This is why it was a mistake to remove the manufacturers races from the game. IT was a lot of fun in prologue since everyones car was exactly the same.

Yeah but you can run a single make race on any track you want in GT5...

GT1 and 2 had tons of modified vehicles driven by the AI.

Not in anywhere near all of the races. Not even in a particularly large minority, for that matter.

Lamborghini Miura strikes again, slaughtering the Murciellago and the Gallardo... and the DB9, and the Veyron... and the Yeah this is stupid, i don't understand it when these 70s cars with 350bhp are beating 600bhp modern supercars, lots of silly things like this happen with the AI, some cars beating others would clearly not happen.

If you got a race with a Mclaren F1, a Bugatti Veyron alongside some 400-500bhp sports car.... theres just no way that the Mclaren or Bugatti should even be challenged, yet the AI just plod along making no sense.. Ahh well i won't lose any sleep over it, the game is still great.

Honestly, I have a feeling the coding for AI car performance is completely random. It's like PD said "okay, for this race all the cars need to roughly have x:xx.xxx lap times" and then each car puts in those times, whether or not one car should or should not be able to beat the others.

I've also noticed the AI seems to play to me. The same group of cars seem to race slower if you have a bad car, and faster if you show up trying to out horse power them.

Unfortunately this kind of thing is what makes me not care about racing cleanly and realistically in some events. The AI is so ridiculous I get so frustrated I find it easier to just ram them out the way just to get past so I can actually have an enjoyable drive :grumpy:
