What is the point of a middle name?

The middle name serves a number of important purposes.

1) To serve as a way to distinguish people with the same first and last name.
2) To serve as a way to distinguish people with the same first and last initial (when only listing initials).
3) To help incorporate family names that are being pressured on you to name your kid. Many family members have their own idea bout what you should name your child, or which family name you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to keep in the family. The middle name is a good way to appease these people without actually damaging your child (much).
4) To serve as an alternate name for your child to use (if they don't like their first name). My father is one of the few people I know who uses his middle name. He initializes his first name the way most people initialize their middle.
5) To allow you to pay tribute to other family members, or family names.
6) To allow women to keep their maiden name when marrying while still using the new family last name.

There was an English Jamaican at my middle school named Ashley. He definitely got some flack, and I think his middle name was lindsey too.

They're both unisex names, though Ashley is imo a hell of a lot more unisex than Lindsey, I don't like the idea of blokes being called Lindsey. But I've known a couple of male Ashleys and femal Ashleys over the years and never thought anything odd about their name.

And from a mum's point of view that is the only real purpose of a middle name. So you kids know when you are REALLY in trouble.

my middle name was not necesarily named after someone but to keep a tradition going.

it goes all the way back to the civil war ( my ancestor fought for the north woo hoo, lol ) anyways he was given silver for his efforts in the civil war and decided to have it made into finely crafted spoons with the initials M.A.P ( for his wife ) since then, atleast one boy in my families line has been named with the initials M.A.P ( my families the only one to keep the tradition because my fathers brother had different initials and he was steril [he died, god rest his soul])

so to keep the tradition going I 1. have to have a boy to keep my families line going ( my dads brother died and was steril as i said so no kids of his own ) and 2. have to name hime with the initials M.A.P

Bingo. I have a friend in school whose fulll name is Randyl Shane Chase. He's called both by different people (one may call him Randyl, one may call him Shane). I call him Randyl.
I use my middle name (which is Skyler) to screw with people, who proceed to constantly ask as to why I sign my name Logan T. King.
 
I kinda feel left out as it appears I'm one of the few people who don't have a middle name..
If my middle name was passed from my dad or Grandad it either be Ian, Terry or Mick
 
There are a pair of girls at my high school that have the same first, last, AND middle names. They are not related in any way, either. Both are seniors, too. On the class ballots (for homecoming queen and other BS) they actual say "tall one" and "short one" to distinguish between the two.

Mohammed is my name

Abdul Hameed is my Father's name

Abdul Hadi is my grand father's name

Ali is my father's grand father

Mohammed is Ali's fathers

Hassan is Mohammed's father

Abdullah is Hassan's Father

Al-Momen is my family name

we could go Further :P but I think thats enough :)

My middle name is my fathers' middle name, which is in turn my grandfathers' first name - Thomas.

If I have children, their middle names will be my mother and father's middle names.

My Mum and both my Aunties haven't got middle names. I don't know anyone else who's like that.

I've never seen the use for one either, but as mentioned above, I suppose it does help identify you if you come across people with the same Christian and Surname.

A friend of mine (who is John xxxxxxxx IV) doesn't have a middle name either. ;)
