What is usually the smallest CRT monitor size that supports SXGA?

I'm moving my newer computer into my room, but I want a monitor that is at the very least 1280*1024 in resolution. I can't take the 17 inch LCD into my room with me, and I wanna know what size a CRT would pull that same resolution. I have a 16 (I think) inch in the garage, and I saw another one at a thrift shop for $25. Is 16 inches big enough for 1280*1024?

Also, another question: Would it be financially viable to sell my television and replace it with a computer monitor and composite input adaptor?

Most low to mid 17" CRT's will be able to handle 1280x1024, but most can't go much higher, if any higher, than that. If you want a higher res than 1280x1024, you might have to go to a 19". Which then begs the question - why not just go LCD? Price, I'm guessing?

Yeah. I'm kinda limited at the moment to about $70, because I don't want to tap into my bank account to fund it. That's why I'm hoping selling my TV could help fund it if I could find and adaptor for composite inputs.
I don't particularly care if it isn't over 1280*1024, though. So long as it is at least that.

What happens in a smaller monitor at higher resolutions is you get down against the dot pitch of the CRT, which makes for a fuzzy picture. You'll find some 15s, but I couldn't tell you at what price. If it's used, you may have to live with somebody's previous desktop burned in to it.

The ideal resolution for a 17'' crt is 1024x768, but 1280x1024 is also possible.
(any bigger and you'll need glasses to read the text on you're screen)

19'' is better for 1280x1024.

You could also buy a 17'' and hook it up to your pc together with the 16'' in your garage :)
That's if your graphics card supports 2 monitors.

I had a crappy old 15" that I bought used from a sort of thrift shop for computers. Its cable had a poor connection in the back, so green would cut out now and then, forcing you to jiggle the wire until your screen returned to normal, but that little bugger could do 1600x1200.

Yup untill I brought my LCD I had an amazing little 15" Samsung monitor. Like Wolfe it could do 1600x1200, and the colour and quality is probably better then my LCD now. But you had to run it at 1024x786, because even 1280x1024 was unreadable.

The problem is, anything under 19" (or 17" maybe), 1280x1024 is way too unusable. Not to mention, even if they did support a resolution that big, they more than likely aren't powerful enough to run a very high refresh rate (which is bad for your eyes).

Thanks for your answers. This has taken a back burner when my attempt to buy another graphics card fell through, however, making my new computer nigh unusable again; so by the time I get around to getting a monitor I'll probably just get a 19 inch LCD.
