Thought I'd post this issue with my car and hopefully this thread could be used as a general Q&A for other peoples cars too.

My car is getting hot when it sits still, probably over heating because of a thermo fan issue, it previously ran at 60-70, now I've seen it get up to 90+ (celsius). Tried the heater fan on full, I hoped it helped, but the other day I found that if I had my A/C on, the car returned from 70+ back down to the low to mid 60s.

It's a '01 Peugeot 306, The problem first started after my last service, and I reported it as a possibly blocked radiator when they repaired another component, and they found nothing wrong with it.

Any ideas why my strange solution is working?

Its a cooling fan issue. I believe that car has 2 cooling fans, and one of them kicks on when the ac is on, to help cool the condenser to the A/C, the other fan, for the Engine, seems as if its not working at all.

Yes I read it had two fans, low and high speed, so I'm guessing the AC fan is just cooling the radiator as well, could be something small like a fuse went during the service, but add it stands I'm not going to book it in separately, the temp fix (the AC) allows me to drive it anywhere, but it is unusual that the AC is actually helping, I think anywhere.

The fan could have also gone out, it does happen from time to time... Id check the fuses, and possibly switch the relay out, to see if it helps. If after checking the fuses, and checking the relay switch, the fan still does not work. Check to see if the temperature switch which kicks the fan on is bad. If you have any electrical knowledge, you could run a hot and a ground to the fan, to the battery, and see if the fan works (it's 12 volts, so it will not hurt it) and that would tell you if the fan is bad or not to start with.

Radiator fan has failed. Turning on the A/C is turning on the condenser fan, and that's pulling enough air through the radiator to help.
