What is wrong with my PS3?

I have an original "large" 40gb PS3 that I've had for over 4 years. It worked fine until recently when it started refusing to turn on. It would turn on and then turn off almost directly after which would be accompanied by several beeps. Eventually it would come on and stay on after several attempts. Now however it is also refusing to load the XMB menu once it comes on. It will rather sit on the initial background screen. I don't have any yellow lights or anything otherwise blinking abnormally.

This is purely an assumptive guess, and I'm probably wrong, but I smell some heat issues (see what I did there).

Heat is a nasty bugger, especially to the PS3's, and to the fat consoles more than the slims. My guess is that she's gotten quite toasty and fried something vital, but I'm no expert on the subject nor could I tell you how to fix is. The most I could suggest is to nick the hard drive out of it and pick up a cheap one on eBay, and throw your drive into it to save your games etc. Wait until other people respond though, they know what they're on about :P

You could have a corrupted database. I rebuilt it and it resolved it for me.

I have always kept it standing on end to help prevent overheating. Its a bit dusty but not terrible. I can't try to reformat or reset anything because the XMB won't load.

This won't work. The moment you put a PS3's harddrive into another it'll try to reformat it.

I'd recommend you don't use a vacuum cleaner to clean it out because they're almost as bad as cats as far as static electricity and the conductance thereof is concerned, which is why compressed air exists. It's impossible to clean out your PS3 even nearly enough unless you take it apart, though, because dust will be packed into the heat stack with nowhere to go. In fact vacuuming the vents does absolutely nothing and is just a placebo because if you have enough dust to be clogging the vents, then the heat stack will definitely be clogged also, the vacuum won't shift that and there's no point having nice, clear vents that do nothing because the fan inside the PS3 can't draw air in or out through them.

Anyway, this doesn't sound to me like a heat issue either. Listen to the hard drive for any clicks or loud noises, which is what seek errors sound like, and if you do hear any then your hard drive is dead or dying. If rebuilding the database doesn't work, try taking the hard drive out, put it in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer (yes, really) for about, I don't know, an hour, put it back in the PS3 (sans freezer bag) and try to rebuild the database again. If that doesn't work, either buy a new hard drive or a new PS3. If it does, back up what you can and buy a new hard drive. No matter what happens I do recommend you open your PS3 up (if that's something you're comfortable doing) and blast the dust out with compressed air. Not only is it a massively satisfying thing to do but it also helps the PS3 out a lot. I apologise if this post is redundant, off-topic or in any other way inappropriate, I'm posting from my phone and I can't remember exactly what this thread is about anymore, but hopefully this is of some help in some way to someone.

I have read an article somewere that having them in that position is worst when it comes to overheating. But Im no expert I just read an article with thermal images on it (both positions)

So I did some resetting and such. It comes on and I can play it but the issue with it turning off this exists. I'd rather not reformat it and lose all my data if I don't have too...

Perhaps a faulty power cord and/or internal power supply. You could try continuing to troubleshoot and trying another power cord. If the issue still persists, another internal power supply may be next.

I was wondering about that. I'm not sure if I'm using the power cord that came with the ps3. I've got three that look exactly the same so I had to just pick one.

I can't help with the issues, but I will say that since it's a "fat" 40GB it might be wise to squirrel away for a new slim. Or grab one if you can spare the expense. I ended up doing a YLOD self-repair on my 80GB 3 times before getting a slim. It got to a point where I just didn't even want to turn it on for fear of failure and potentially not being able to transfer everything to a new system.

Yes get it backed up ASAP. Don't let time pass by before you backup. First thing you have to do(Do a whole system backup).

So now I'm getting error 80030416 when I try to save a game.

Probably a sector on your HDD that has gone corrupt... I googled that error and some users report that they had to rebuild the database which fixed the problem and kept all their data.

Probably. Just follow the instructions for a full system-to-system transfer and you'll be good to go. It's a pretty painless process, and it doesn't take all that long. Everything should just work on the new system once it's all done.

Remember when I had to ditch a 40 gig for a slim? It's still going strong, and it will probably break now that I jinxed it.

Mine didn't ylod yet I don't think... For a brief split second between the green light turning red it would turn yellow but it didn't blink and would still load up and play eventually. I think I'll clean it with a can of CO2 and do a full reformat. We'll see.

Yeah, it couldn't hurt. When I read your original post, it did not sound like YLOD. Mine was beeping at me and everything, and I couldn't even get in, as it just turned itself off within seconds(I think).

I didn't get to say goodbye to mine. You are lucky. At least yours are in & out of comma.

I am going to let my little brother use it until he gets one. He is 11. I told him I'll try and clean it and do the reformat. Hopefully it doesn't break the next day. He is super excited even though I tried to explain its not going to last long.
