You know that feeling. The adrenaline rush, anticipation, and excitement of getting a brand new game!! You can even remember the smell as you read this. I will share my "new game opening" ritual then I want to hear yours.
First I start out by setting at least 2 bottles of beer on the table so once it starts I wont have to get up again for a few minutes. I crank the surround sound up nice and loud. I also make sure all the blinds are shut and I give the bathroom a quick visit. As soon as I get back I take a huge drink and get prepared to open. Once I am all settled on the couch or game room I
I usually start by sticking some object in the groove where your fingers would go that way it puts a cut in the plastic. Now I just rip any covering right off including any security items. Now I imediately grab the game and put it in. usually ignoring the book until later. I always watch the opening trailer if there is one. Next I go to any of the audio and visual options to make sure they are set up for surround sound and HDTV. Following this I will see what other settings I can mess with to get the best experience from my new game. Finally I enjoy the simple pleasures in life. :)
Cant wait to experience all of this again tomorrow when TDU comes out. The best part is that Heather and I both will be opening ours at the same time. :D:tup:

for a moment there I thought you were talking about something other than a game...

I take the shrink wrap off and stick the game in my 360 and start to play. That's my ritual.

change 360 for pc and you've got mine...

there isn't much ritual about it except my swearing if the damn plastic wrapping won't come off.
i do like the smell however.

My games get opened long before I get home if I'm not driving. If I hitched a ride with someone, I will most likely open the game long before I can play it out of boredom. When I drive myself though, I just wait till I get home.

I read the instruction booklet. Sad but true. :(

Only once I've read the whole booklet do I play the game.

Weird, I know :odd:

I'll take teh shrink warp off then move to the tape stuff then....
I get really pissed off because the package needs to be perfect or I kill a little part of me inside... adn I useually can't get the tape off with putting a finger nail into the plastic on the outside.......

Then after crying for 10 minutes I start the game.

It's all true, except for the crying part. I sware.

Get game.

Put game in console.

Hope it works so I don't have to go return it.

If game works enjoy.

If game fails, curse game, curse shop, walk back to car and return, curse store attendant, eat sushi.

Well, I have to say that I can't enjoy anything really as much as I did as I was a young kid / teenager... but that is normal. Apart from that it also depends on the game and how much you know about it. Honestly, playable demos, highres videos, boards and reviews before launch - that all kind of ruins the "first moments" with your game.

As I was young, all I had were a few pics and maybe a preview / review in a gaming magazine.
Therefor the actual excitement was a lot greater than it can be today. Of course after a few minutes/hours of gameplay, you love the game, but the feelings described above by camaroboy are replaced by a " hmm ok, new game, I think it will rock...I know it since, I watched a 18 min trailer 5 days before, a preview showing the first ten minutes showing the game 2 days ago and loaded the demo on marketplace yesterday"

And I tell you sth, if you want back those feelings, go and import games from Japan. Import them at the very first minute, even if you risk that the game sucks.
Games that you bought just by knowing that you like the genre and the cover, maybe the screenshots, are even greater than those games you know by heart before they even launch. It still works, even if you are not as young.
Make buying games an adventure, not a business deal, planed over months.

It is a mission impossible for popular western games, unless you live in a cave the year before it gets released... :indiff:

Nothing dramatic here. Wait for it to (usually) come through the post, take ages to take wrapping off (I fail to use sizzors for anything), stick it into console and I'm away.

Get game.

Hope it doesn't have issues.

Install/insert.

If it works then play and enjoy (often reading the manual while I'm at it).

If it fails get dissapointed and rampantly search internet for fix (thats if its not an obvious problem, no time to troubleshoot the prob myself cause I WANT TO PLAY NOW! :D).

I usually always fix the problem through the internet or if the problem is unique, I almost always figure a fix myself.

Hmmmm. I agree with you guys on many things here.

I don't like some of the tough seals on the cases. Especially when you start to peel them off, and they leave residue or start tearing into smaller pieces. I've had like new DVDs that just came out do that stuff, like the seals had been on there for years! :grumpy:

I also don't feel much excitement from opening a brand new video game either. For Dragon Quest or Gran Turismo, I might smile while opening the game, but that's about it. Then again, I'm 32. I do miss the good old days, when it was very exciting to open new SNES/Super Famicom games. Good times.

As for the ritual, I pretend to read the manual for like 30 seconds. And I usually watch the opening movie of the game. If I'm really excited or are in a good mood, I might do some kind of dance move with my upper body, while still sitting down. That's about it, I think.
