What is your town famous for?

I think every town in America (and probably elsewhere in the world) has one or two specific 'claims to fame'. If you don't mind sharing, what is your town famous for?

Mine is famous for being in the New York Times as the methamphetamine Capitol of the World. Apparently my town cranks (no pun intended) out more meth than any other one this size. It sucks, really. I fear my kids growing up in this environment and I wish the local cops could do more. Every day in a small, independent paper there is usually 3/4 of a page dedicated to meth-related arrests. One good sign lately is the explosion of an apartment that was a meth lab. Maybe more will get careless and blow themselves up. :)

Oh, and the Maytag company headquarters are here too. :)
 
Well, I live in a town in Sydney, Australia called Gladesville.

It's famous because of a bridge - the Gladesville (!) Bridge:

It is the second longest concrete arch bridge in the world.

We had a crazy homeless guy named The Archangel. He died a few weeks ago and there are a huge service for him - the mayor even showed up, along with the judge who gave him his nickname, and several other major public figures.

So my city is famous for treating it's homeless like celebrities.
 
Yeah - they weren't mucking around when they put that puppy up. Everyone thinks of the Harbour Bridge when they think of Sydney.

He was called the Archangel because he was once arrested for threatening and chasing nuns around in a church. He generally walked around downtown greeting people, but sometimes would do things like take off all his clothes and sit on someone's car. Very interesting person.

Lets see, my town has a couple:

Kissimmee, Fl. The town everyone stays in when they come to visit Walt Disney World, or any other "Orlando attraction."

By the way there are two parts to Kissimmee, the tourist side, and the local side. You can the difference when you see gas prices drop about 25 cents.

Tupperware World Headquaters is located in Kissimmee.

It is also the fastest growing city in Florida. Even though the pop is just under 50,000
 
I live in Lancaster, Pa and we're famous for being Amish Country. "Witness" and "For Richer or Poorer" were filmed here and rumor has it that another movie with Steven Tyler will be filmed here starting in March.
 
Phoenix, AZ. Famous for being the hottest major U.S. city. Also famous for being where Danny Bonaducci got arrested for punching out a transvestite hooker. Surprise! :lol:
 
I grew up in a little town in south eastern Vermont. It holds the only Round one room school house in the US. Built in late 1700's by a robber baron from England. Rumor has it so cops couldn't hide around the corner from him.

The town common featured in the Chevy Chase movie "Funny Farm" was where I went to High School.

I lived in Burlington, VT when the Jim Carrey flick "Me, Myself & Irene" and the Harrison Ford flick "What Lies Beneath" were being filmed there.

The town I live in now, was once in competition with Boston for the capitol of Massachusetts. Many years ago.

Those are the high points.

I grew up in Elmhurst, Il. Keebler is based there.

I then lived in Chicago, Il. Famous for Sears Tower, gangsters, corruption, brutal cops (Chicago is the only major US city that has never been featured on COPS... guess why), theatre, blues, E.R., the largest Mexican polulation outside Mexico and the largest Polish polulation outside Warsaw.

Myrtle Beach is famous for the amount of tourists it brings in. It was in the top 3 vacation spots for Christmas travelers next to Paris and (Forgot the city. Its a big city though :)).

What the heck does "Toad Suck" mean???
Well, the answer is quite simple...

Long ago, steamboats traveled the Arkansas River when the water was at the right depth. When it wasn't, the captains and their crew tied up to wait where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now spans the river.

While they waited, they refreshed themselves at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the folks living nearby, who said: "They suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence, the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone, but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze.

I live in Conway, Arkansas. It's about halfway between Toad Suck, Arkansas, and Pickle's Gap, Arkansas. Conway is actually a pretty normal town, outside of its neighbors. Actually we're quite developed. We have three colleges; the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College, and Central Baptist College. We have a Fortune 500 company, Acxiom, and several other major corporations; Kimberly Clark, manufacturer of bathroom products; Virco, manufacturer primarily of school furnature; AmTran, manufacturer of school busses (one of three such companies in the Nation); and home to the Fighting Wampus Cats, our high school mascot (there are only four Wampus Cats in the US that I am aware of).

It's a pretty hip place.
 
Miami's famous for it's great parties, clubs, and beaches. I live 20 minutes from the nearest beach, even though i live in the suburbs. :D

Oh, and having most of The Fast and the Furious 2 filmed here, can't forget that. :rolleyes:
 
St.Louis is famous for the Arch...completed in 1964, it's the tallest man made monument in the US at 630 feet tall. Its made of triangular peices. 2 elevators that go sideways at 4 points on the way up.

Lou Fusz Dealer Network(my dad works for Lou Fusz Mazda-Subaru) is the biggest network in MO.
Car building plants in STL include the Ford Explorer line, Dodge Ram(and Ram Van) line, and something else...
Plaza Motors, MO's largest luxury dealership(about a mile from my house...I've biked up there many times)
There's a huge Hummer dealership off of 70 west of STL.
Boing HQ is here.
Lambert St.Louis International Airport.

Route 66 runs through here(Lewis and Clark stuff)
1904 World's fair was here
Forest park.
King of the Hill(the movie) was filmed in STL
Sports teams: Cardinals(baseball), Rams(sucky football), Blues(hockey), Ambush(soccer).

Don't forget Bad Boys, and Bad Boys 2. Love that movie can't wait till the next one comes out. The taping made the news all the way up here in Orlando.
