what kind of drift is this?

I was reviewing the different drift techniques in some of the FAQs and I was wondering about a technique that i've been using for a while on that long double apex turn after passing the start/finish ling at Apricott Hill

Basically, i approach the corner (it curves to the left) at high speed, let off the throttle, feint to the right, then hard turn back to the left to kick the end out ...but right before i loose traction from the feint, i open the throttle back up (power over-stlye) to induce the traction loss. The reason i feint at first is so i can get a high angle.

But my question is what kind of drift would this classify as?-- it seems like a mix between a feint, throttle-lift, and power over. And is this a less optimal way to drift that turn? I feel like a braking drift might work better, but the one i've been doing looks pretty smooth-- only problem is getting the proper angle. (Driving a 300hp RX-7 FD)

That's what I do when I attempt drifting (not often :dunce: )

It's just using a combination of techniques to get sideways like using accel off and braking but instead you're using feint, accel off and power over. Anyways it's better to use a combination of techniques to drift IMO.

Exactly....

and let me also point out the good advice, to use a combination of techniques.... This is very important....

Different combinations of all available techniques is necessary to learn, IMO, to be able to drift any turn in the most efficient manner.....

;)

I'd have to agree with Silviadirfter and NsX_DrifTer, I use a combination myself although I've been trying to just rely on simply one technique to drift thru most turns and for me that's possible even though I'm not always aware of it.

What you described (you meaning 280Z_surge) sounds preaty much what many would do to take that very turn. I wish I was absoutely certain, but for me I'm a bit of a baka to specefic drift terms despite how I'm prob a good drifter myself. I'll have to look at a replay and see exaclty what I do to tackle that turn with both an FR and a MR (becuase I have a reply of me taking that turn well with a Corvette Grand Sport, Corvette Z06 and Ford GT40...I also did it with a Camero Z28, AE86 and S14 Silvia...got close with a C5R Corvette...) so I'll give a better reply than this.

Here's what I can figure so far of how I would tackle it from what I can recall. I basilcy brake just before the entrance, for a instant feint to the outside before cutting into the inside giving full throttle and countersteering going in, I slam on the brakes to keep on a strait line (because my entry speed to begin with will be well north of 160kph/100mph, for the Corvettes and Camero maybe over 200kph/125mph and I will be in a sense going too fast to keep the throttle applied for long...) or as strait as drifts go at a high angle anyway, before re-applying the gas to clear the 2nd corner and exit on the outside.

I think the real key to clearing that specifc corner is to not think of it as just 2 turns but really one big turn that's been segmented or something. Basilcy be out-in-and out although that is very difficult to do becuase in any style of driving, drifting or grip, once a line is taken, you either take it or go off into the gravel and we all know this well from RL racing and even Initial D you see that.
*warning long examples ahead*
Take episode 15 Stage 1, AE86 VS EG-6, when Shingo was trying to keep Takumi from taking the inside line, and then assumed Takumi would ram him out of revenge (because in episode 14 Shingo rammed Takumi going into a turn and that pissed Takumi off...) braked, by doing that he got off from the would be perfect line and was forced to brake, losing more speed, otherwise he would have slamed into the wall, a similar case with Nakazato in the battle before when he purposely took the outsideline with a higher entry speed to keep Takumi from taking that line not knowing he could change his line during braking with the 86 only to find himself understeering and unable to take back the ideal line and spining out due to worn out tires and too much throttle...

Err...okay maybe it's a bad habbit to keep at with these long replys , anywho, again it's a combination of techniques as some have said already. geezee...need to make replys shorter...er okay enough of my words, till later...

Yeah, I use a combinition of techniques, 280z_surge use a combition of feint drift and power over, I use a little different technique, combine a very little of braking drift and power over, but is much more of power over, I have the brake of rear at maximum power, and I use that power of brake to make the car let the rear slide, but just a little, it is a little like the motocross, my favorite hobby. :)
