What makes a Sports Car?

Thread title: What makes a car no longer be just a car, but a sports car? Is it looks, performance, pedigree, or something else?

Yes, I realize that there probably is no clear definition, but I am interested in hearing what you people think as I had a discussion with a friend about it. He had no clear definition, but I have one (albeit personal).

Well, this topic has been heavily discussed over here in this thread.

Sports car in my mind is one that sacrifices luxuries and conveniences for better performance. My MR2 is a fairly solid example. My M3 is more of a sporty car/grand touring deal.
