What odd and interesting subjects have you used for school papers?

I've made it a point in my schooling to not be boring when being allowed to choose my own topics for reports. This has backfired more than once, but I regret nothing. These were a few of my favorite assignments.

In high school I handed in a 10+ page report on Ghost in the Shell the movie, attempting to explain just some of the social and religious implications of the dialogue and the production process of the anime itself.

I also once did one in high school on Walt Disney and his alleged connections to the CIA and Nazi party and possible double agent status, touching briefly on his interest in creating the society of the future with the original Epcot plans, and his interests in applied cryogenic research.

In a political science class at college, with a former W. Bush staffer as the teacher, I handed in papers throughout the class detailing accounts of extraordinary rendition and illegal wiretapping by his old boss and was assured of how wrong I was, but still received a perfect 4.0 in his class. Less than one month after finals, everything was proven true and was all over the news.

I did a few reports on Tesla as well in high school. I swear that man was the most intelligent human that ever lived, hands down. His research and theories would revolutionize our ideas of energy independence and transmission if we were only able to fully grasp and apply them. I still have my 12th grade Tesla Coil science project in pieces somewhere. That may have been my favorite assignment ever.

So what have you done? I'm sure with all the people on here, there are bound to be some very interesting answers.

For my grade 11 final we had to write an original essay as a part of our final. Did a story on a stuffed animal who went from the machine through to a kid....our topic was something about compainionship or something and so I related it to how he had others with him in the machine and he goes through loneliness while in the car and then happiness again when united with the kid..... hahahaha what a geek I am, anyway 100% which was worth 20% of that class so I was pretty happy.

Did a massive History 12 essay on the Kennedy assasination and concispiracies surrounding that except from different points of view instead of the classic stuff that's out there. Being Canadian it was pretty cool reading about all the stuff that went on and how disliked Kennedy actually was by a lot of powerful people despite his popularity with the masses.

Huge focus of most of the research in university the first couple years has been on concussions as I have big issues with the. Unbelievable to find out what I've done to myself so far and it's pretty interesting stuff to read, well atleast to me.

I did a few reports on Tesla as well in high school. I swear that man was the most intelligent human that ever lived, hands down.

I earnt my Physics A level by basing my coursework on the affect that mass has on a racing car. Tested scientifically with scalextrix at the back of our classroom along 4 metres of straight

Had to evaluate a business during a business studies course, so I chose Pagani and researched where they came from, the cars and then future plans as well.

Materials engineering, spoke extensively about carbon fibre, its uses within F1 (and commerially thereafter) and the Lamborghini that will be built from carbon fibre all over where feasible.

Currently in the process of starting a year long project at college too, and I really want to design and build a F1 steering wheel (displays, lights, switches etc) for a F1 simulator company I work part time. I really hope I'm allowed to do this, not only because I think it would be awesome but also think I can get a really good grade from doing so.

Hmm... someone did an essay at my high school about Dick Cheney. Labelled him a scumbag, provided the definition of scumbag, provided evidence supporting his claim and he got 90%. I did one a paper about communism in Venezuela and how it is neccesary for society to be ruled by one leader who can guide us in the correct direction. I mentioned that my teacher would make a great leader because she is strict and intelligent. The necessary traits of a communist leader. And yeah, she didn't like it.

Wrote some pretty boring stuff in high school, to be honest. We had to write a paper about a famous (or not-so-famous) non-American for history class, so I chose Stirling Moss. I doubt anyone will do that again, although I received an A, with bonus points for stumping the teacher. Another time I wrote a comparison between Cole Trickle from Days of Thunder and Luke Skywalker of Star Wars , but that didn't work out so well. Maybe I should have chosen Luke Skyywalker instead.

After that, I never wrote a serious paper about motorsports again.

Another time I wrote a comparison between Cole Trickle from Days of Thunder and Luke Skywalker of Star Wars , but that didn't work out so well.

Nice! No grade could ever replace the coolness that comes with stating that fact. Sometimes our reviews must suffer in order to preserve journalistic integrity.


I just now remembered a lengthy instructional speech that my friend Josh gave in class on 5 easy steps to becoming the dictator of a small country. It was classic to see the teacher's expressions as he explained his plans in detail. Kinda like a scene from Pinky and the Brain or something. I wish I had a copy of that speech to post on here.


Man, all you guys have already listed some great ones! I'm glad people are responding to this and it's interesting for me to read and see what others have done. Thanks and keep 'em coming everyone.

In the 7th grade I did our big book report project on Metal Gear Solid 2. It was too deep for my teacher to handle.

Also, in my first year in college I turned in a 20 page research paper on Global Dollar Hegemony for my US History 1940-Present class while everyone else did a few pages on Martin Luther King etc.

Well, I've received Bull 🤬 for the past couple of years.

Example: "She was trying to join the marble contest but her thumb was very weak. She began exercising her thumb it became fat and strong. She won the marble contest. Because of her determination."

I summed up our school write project in a few sentences, can you believe the 🤬 we have to write about? It's like I'm in 4th grade. :facepalm:

Ok, I've always wrote some boring assignments for English and stiff like that, but I would argue to the death with my teacher cause he was always wrong.

I did a book report on Initial D and I didn't even read the manga. I got an A on it. In 7th grade, I made a poem on the Nissan GT-R. I had to tell my teachers what the Nurburgring was.

I did a speech on rally racing. I didn't get nearly as detailed as I could have; kind of just covered the very basics.

I also started a paper on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution series... it got a little out of hand because they are my favorite cars. My teacher actually had to tell me to cut out information so she didn't have to read so much. Psh. Whatever. I could read about Mitsubishi all day. =D

My high school senior year English paper was on daytime television. I categorized the show types, like game shows, soap operas, etc., the intended audiences, and how that reflected how the producers perceived their audience. There was also discussion of the commercial side of production, sponsor dollars going to what audience, stuff like that.

I got a B, but mostly because I abandoned the subject I'd been working on all those weeks, and for the life of me I can't even recall what that was. You know how you have to turn in note cards every so often, rough drafts, whatever, just to prove that you really are "reasearching" your paper? Well, my paper had nothing to do with any of what I'd been working on up to the final week, and I did it all in 3 days. Teacher's notes said was easily an A paper, but she couldn't give me the A because I didn't have the preliminary work done on the subject I used.

BTW, fishing for ideas, or what?

In my first year of high school my english teacher got so sick of me relating everything to cars in some way that she said she would fail me if I did it anymore and I once paid my brother $5 to do an assignment for me that I couldnt be bothered doing and it managed to get me a B+ and he was 3 years below me

I try not to get my interests into what I'm writing. When I write I try to be as rude as possible without actually offending anyone. I only do this when the teacher sucks. I wrote a poem about Molvania (Molvania was an Australian book published to make fun and pke at eastern Europe). I also wrote a disturbing poem about the Berlin Wall (which should have scared the living Sh** out of her).

I'm impressed with all the reports on cars and racing, though on GTP I don't guess I should really be surprised. I don't know how I managed to never write anything at all on the subject in school. ? Though honestly in high school I was more preoccupied with the cheerleaders than cars so my car was just a way to get around at the time. I blame it on the uniforms. (hehehe) As soon as I graduated I was back to normal and again knew what was truly most important. 💡

I'm not currently writing any papers or even in school but I guess I posted this just to see what kind of answers I could get from people, and maybe get some little tidbits of insight from the subjects people choose to write on. In school it seemed that a lot of people really didn't like writing reports or speeches, but I always enjoyed it. I never did the recommended process either, I'd usually chickenscratch a crude outline just a few days before the due date and then flesh out the details and edit myself as I go. I think the last minute pressure actually helped me to write better. or at least that is what I would tell myself the day before I would start a paper.

OH... And Omnis. JeebusHCrikey. The Metal Gear storyline and the all twist and turns and implications and double crosses and xxx and xxx etc..... I recently downloaded the MGS4 Database from the ps store. It's biblical in complexity. Seriously. Hell, Peace Walker by itself was one of the best story lines I have ever seen in a game. Loved it.

My best one was in my english GCSE exam.
The question said comment on and review a challenge in your life I could not think of a time I could write about so I mixed fact and added tons of BS to it.
