Hi. I have a question and I thought maybe I could get an answer here.

I'm looking for some kind of car racing game that's similar to those that you find in arcades. Specifically, something similar to either the Initial D games that you find at the arcade or that game Maximum Tune in the arcades.

Basically, this game is a simple arcade racing game where you have point to point racing (10 to 25km in distances) and you can choose from like 15-20 or so japanese cars (skyline, rx-7, rx-8, 240sx and such) and you race against 1 opponent through traffic and it has like catch up so you even if you have slower car you can keep up with the other guy.

Anyway, it's a relatively very arcadey racing game. I'm looking for something like this to possibly play 2 player on my PS2 with a friend. I have the DFP wheel, so that's why I'm looking for something on PS2. Is there any game similar to what I just described on the PS2 that I could get? Or if there isn't, is there one for Xbox?

Thanks in advance.

Maximum Tune -- Three words: Tokyo Xtreme Racer. A budget-title racing series made by Genki, the same Japanese development team that created the first Wangan Midnight game (to which Maximum Tune and MT2 are the Namco-developed sequels). Although they're far from top-tier racing games, they make up for it with great car customization, a great car selection (if you like Japanese cars), and a faithful recreation of the Tokyo highway system (even a bit larger than the area Maximum Tune covers). They also happen to be the only source for Tokyo highway action on the PS2, unless you want to import the actual Wangan Midnight PS2 game from Japan.

I would personally recommend Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, because compared to TXR0, TXR3's 2-player mode isn't half-bad, the graphics are decent, and the physics are a bit easier to contend with.

Initial D -- The only thing we have so far in america that comes close is Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift. As you could probably guess, it's also made by Genki, but concentrates on a few of the famous mountain roads north of Tokyo. To be perfectly honest, it isn't really worth a purchase unless you must have an Initial-D-style game, because Genki's driving physics -- which are just tolerable on the Tokyo highways -- can become rather frustrating when you have lots of hairpins to contend with and an AI driver who seems to know how to take them just right. An alternative is Initial D Special Stage, which would be another Japan import. Other than that (and I'm clutching at straws with this one, though I thought I'd give it a mention), Konami's Enthusia Professional Racing has a mountain road in it, although the closest track it has to Wangan Midnight's Tokyo highways is a Ridge-Racer-style romp through a small section of Tokyo roads.
