What racing games are really missing...

this has been something that i believe has been missing ever since i played GT3 for the first time, and this thing is peripheral vision. i have recently been playing GT4 prologue with the driving force pro wheel, and i think the main thing that has been giving me problems is that whenever i make a turn, i can't see what is immediately to the right or left of me, and to me i consider this to be a crucial part of racing. it seriously hampers my ability to make sharp turns as i can't really see how close i am to the wall. one example is the slight hairpin on the Cita di Aria after the downhill left turn (closer to beginning of track). i'm well aware that it is probably a programming feat to create this effect, but i think that it will be an integral part to the growth of racing games. i would like to hear what others think about it as well.

I agree, it's critical. The only attempt to get around it I've seen has been the ability to look right and left in the TOCA series and in Grand Prix Legends.

Unless you've got support for side monitors, or perhaps Virtual Reality type glasses, can't see anyone doing much about it.

In EA's NAscar series, you have the option to 'look left and right'. Quite useful.

But a trio-monitor is the best way.

I am using a 16:9 monitor, I think it helps some what.

well, that must be really nice, but sad to say i don't have that option right now. how much are tri-monitors right now??

3 monitors + VidCard that supports it (Matrox). For PC games of course.

Else, 3 PS2, 3 Games and 2 ilink cables.

How about trying to learn the track, then spend some time at the LOGEER - just to see places where you can actually start the turn earlier (and there are LOTS of places like that) - then learn them too, and guess what: You'll know the track.

And just to notice this: left/right view would rock, no doubt.

The look left and look right buttons would have to be in an easily accesable place though and where you could get to without having rubber fingers.

Live for Speed has the option to move the view with steering inputs. I usually on have it set to a few degrees each way but it can really help you nail the apex of the corner. The thing is though, Live for Speed has a fully modelled dash and interior so you still have a clear sense of where the car is pointed.

This would be difficult to implement in GT4 because there is no in car view so it would be hard to know the difference between where the car is pointed compared to the view. Maybe if there was a view across the bonnet it would solve this problem

make that 3 iLink cables and an iLink HUB. ;) A shame I don't have a third PS2 actually because I have everything else.

Even then though at the moment you can only use it in iLink mode unfortunately, which you can only race against other people and not the AI, so it's a shame.

I myself use the very accurate force feedback to determine where I am on the track. Most tracks in GT have areas on the side of the track that you can feel you're driving on and tell me more accurately how close to the edge of the track I am then a side view could.

I only miss looking sideways when I'm doing multiplayer races with other fast drivers. It's sometimes very tricky to see what you should do when you're driving next to someone. You just can't see him, and I've been in a situation where we were driving sideways up to the chicane in Seattle - we both slowed down to let the other pass at the same time and crashed into each other.

maybe like the rearview mirror their could be a retangle or box on either side with whats directly left or right. what do you guys think about this?

Only racing games I've played where could look around properly are toca2, pgr2, and ferrari 355 in the arcade :). TBH it's not much use on PGR2, I swear it's there just to show off the cars lol

As Code_Kev claims to own CobraGT in his signature, let me put a little of my mind into this thread.

At first, I thought this thread was about some outrageous or unrealistic thing racing games are "missing." However, "F1 World Grand Prix" for the N64 had a unique rear view. I think if you pressed "L," you can see your left side mirror. If you pressed "R," you see from your right side mirror. If GT wanted to implement that, it would be interesting. If car damage was implemented (I'm not campaigning for any), if the mirrors were taken out, either only the rear view is shown, or you can't see from behind (which makes races harder, especially if you are leading and the competition is tougher than burnt waffles).

I have driven GT3 with 3 screens and found the peripheral views to be, um, useless on the one track used in the hydraulic GT3 simulator.

Sorry - it's a nice thought and it might even work on the tightest loops of Complex String, but, during the one opportunity that I had to do this, it surely didn't help me.

Cheers,

MasterGT
