What TV do I get to avoid burn-in?

So I’m in the market for a new fancy big TV (I'm thinking around 70"). The reason I’m buying a new one is that my current 20-year-old TV has a busload of things burned into the screen from years of gaming. I have meters in all four corners. I have the opening screen to the original Nintendo and (I think) the PSX. I have random ghosts of things that I don’t know what they are. I am really bad about passing out in front of the TV with my game paused. So, I want to buy a new TV, but I never want this to happen to me again. Anyone know what kind of TV won’t do this? I asked Google and it gave me this, is this a good thing: http://www.dlp.com/

All phosphor based display systems (CRT direct and rear view and plasma) are susceptible to image retention.

Are you looking for flat-panel TV's, or does it not matter? I'm not well-versed with DLP technology at all, but LCD is probably your best bet.

Agreed. I have a 50" LCD and have had no problems as of yet, DLP is also another way you can go which sometimes can be a little cheaper. Neither of which will give you any unwanted "burns" as far as I know of. 👍

Cool, that's good. I went to a bunch of stores yesterday. The salespeople also assured me that DLP won't burn in. I still need to go to a high end place, all the stores I went to had their TV's set up incorrectly and the brightness settings were all tweaked. Still, I think I subjectively prefer the look of DLP. There's something "digital" about the LCD's and Plasmas. The tone and contrast aren't right for my eyes.

I don't know much about DLPs, but I am kind of surprised that DLP won't have burn in damage.

I own a rear projection 47" widescreen. I've done some stupid stuff, with the worst one being falling asleep while watching Terminator 2 or something. When I woke up in the morning, the menu from the DVD were on the monitor the whole time. :ouch: Suprisingly, only burn in I have is where the black bars are on the widescreen movies(just 2.35:1 for some reason). It's not bad at all, kind of half-transparent. 70" sounds huge! Good luck shopping. :)

I'm actually shopping for a big screen tv as well. I'm planning to get a Sony KDS-R60XBR1. It's a LCOS system, which is kinda like both LCD and DLP technologies combined. It looks amazing. I'm planning to get the 60" Sony or a 50" Plasma. I'm not sure which to get just yet.

The plasma I heard, have less burn in issues now. It was the 1st or 2nd generation of plasma that had a huge burn in issue.

Good luck on your purchase - and do you know which TV set you are looking it?

I would recommend the Sony KDS-R60XBR1. It's mind-blowing.

Yeah, after a lot of reserach and more legwork yesterday I think I'm gonna go with a Samsung DLP, this one:

That's a very nice Samsung. I saw one - or a model like it - at Circuit City the other day. It looks pretty good.

I still like the Sony ;).

Also try Toshiba 72HM195. It's a 72" Toshiba with the same resolution as the Samsung you are looking at now.

We already purchase a Toshiba 62HM195. We bought the 62" for $2246 instead of the 72" for about $3200. My dad didn't think 10 inches would be worth a thousand more. 62" is big enough. :)

We purchased it online - it would cost way more in retail stores.

For your Samsung - the cheapest price I saw was the same price as the Toshiba 72HM195. Which is around $3200 including shipping and taxes. Of course this is on the internet - which has its disadvantages.

Snou, make sure that TV had HDMI 1.3, okay? It looks like a hell of a set, but just make sure it's futureproofed with HDMI 1.3 so you can actually utilize that 1080p resolution.

👍 Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks a lot for this! I wouldn't have thought to check. It is, luckily. I ended up getting it at the high end AV place in town, even though their prices weren't the cheapest they have their own warranty and it covers replacement DLP bulbs for five years. So, I did the math, and I think I came out ahead.

So, now I have this giant beautiful DLP TV!
