Report: Porsche 928 successor under development

Porsche is indeed developing a successor to the 928 coupe alongside its four-door Panamera, according to a new report. Germany's Auto Zeitung says development is underway on the new grand tourer, which should arrive not long after its four-door sibling.
The Panamera, a coupe-like sedan reminiscent of the Mercedes CLS-Class or Aston Martin Rapide, is expected to launch in 2008 as a 2009 model. It will feature a front-engine layout with V8 power.
The original 928 — built between 1977 and 1995 — featured a similar setup to the Panamera, with a large V8 in front of the driver and power to the rear wheels. Building a two-door version of the Panamera as a replacement to the 928 seems logical, then.
While there is still no concrete evidence of 928 prototypes, several months ago spies at Porsche's test center in Germany reported seeing a prototype vehicle wearing a 1995 Porsche 928 body, but with heavy modification and a pile of measurement equipment inside. The car appeared to be a testbed for a new platform, with a wider stance than the old 928.
Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard rumors of a new 928 — and that might be a good sign. In early 2006, Road and Track said Porsche planned to revive the 928 with a 2010 model based on the Panamera. 18 months later, the rumors continue to circulate, with no denial from Porsche officials.

Linky.

I can only say sweet. I hope they don't mess up the styling, and I hope they don't allow AWD. But I must say, this market segment is getting a little confusing.
Aston develops the V8 Vantage to fight the 911. BMW develops the 6 series to do much the same. So Porsche takes the fight straight to them. I'm sure Audi fits in there somewhere as well, trying to steal market share. And the lower level SL class might as well be too.

I dunno if I'd call the 928 the best ever to return (I'm saving that for the 914), but its a much-needed model in the Porsche lineup. The Panamera is going to spin off a lot of great models, and the 928 will likely become a fan-favorite.

The idea of it using the Cayenne's Turbo V8 sounds good right about now, and it should be good for some impressive speed numbers. Lets just hope they can keep the weight down...

What will the 928 do? Is it going to be more of a luxury car to compete with the Aston or will it be more about all-out numbers than coddling passengers down the highway? Anyway, I'm excited to see how this thing turns out.

I'm really glad that is just an artist's impression. I do not like it.:yuck:

914 successor? Isn't that the Cayman? :D

As for the thread title No duh. It's about time they finally got around to doing it.

Say, maybe they make it sort of a 599 competitor? Something below the Carrera GT but theoretically above the 911?

"No one is surprised" indeed. This model has been long-known to be coming. But I'm glad it is.

All they need now is a modern 924/944/968 successor to make the roster complete, assuming the Boxster/Cayman represents the 914, as niky says. Something like a smaller front-engined sports coupe in the M3/350Z/Mustang category, with a turbocharged 4-cylinder derived from the Panamera's V8...of course, if Porsche doesn't want to do 4-cylinders anymore, a straight-six or front-mounted flat-six wouldn't go unappreciated.

I'm really glad that is just an artist's impression. I do not like it.:yuck:
Well, it's a bit nicer-looking than the photoshop I did of a camouflaged Panamera months ago... :dopey:

Hmmm... four cylinders? Like maybe a high-revving, naturally aspirated boxer-four? :D

Put that in a down-sized Cayman, and things should get interesting.

Of course, I doubt Porsche is going to go that far downmarket.
