What would happen if I outputted HD video to a computer monitor?

Lately I've been looking into getting a computer and all that jazz. I bought this nifty 19 inch monitor with a resolution of 1440x900, which is 16:10. I also happen to have PS3 that can play Bluray movies, which come out 16:9. Since my other TV is a CRT, I came up with the clever idea of an HDMI to DVI adapter, which they totally make, and playing Bluray movies on the monitor. But since the aspect ratios aren't correct, and the monitor's native res isn't anywhere near either HD resolution, what would it look like?

On a 16:10 monitor you should have black bars on the top and bottom of the image. But it should play exactly like it would on any normal TV or monitor. If you have a higher resolution, you'll see more, but the image will just be shrunk a little bit to match your resolution because the movie should be at 1080p (which is 1920x1200). But at that size you won't notice the resolution difference. The movie will still play at 1080p though even though your monitor is smaller.

I frequently watch HD movies on my laptop which is only 1280x800. :/

The monitor would treat the PS3 as a normal computer, and thus would output in the closest available resolution 1280X720. Depending on your monitor and monitor settings, the monitor would either show a 16:9 image slightly stretched vertically to fit 16:10 or would show slight letterboxing.

Yes it stretches, I know from experience. Currently I'm running the PS3 through a 22" monitor, and it does stretch, it's kind of annoying at first but you'll get used to it eventually I guess.
