Hi all,

Like probably all or most PC users I frequently need and use a ZIP program to unpack downloaded files. But which one to use without paying for it? WinZip can be downloaded but only for a limited usage time, and most others I have seen so far are crap. Your help is greatly appreciated 👍

I use 7-zip. Mainly because it can uncompress rar files as well as zips.

Really? My 21 day "evaluation period" ended 356 days ago and still works. I'm positive that we have machines in the office that have gone longer than that.

*checks*

Yep - 1802 days (almost 5 years) and still going strong.

I'm with Capt'n Slow here - Haven't used anything but 7-Zip since as long as I can remember - Which isn't very long these days..

I use the one that came with my jeans.

Hahahaha, I'm funny.

WinRAR when I'm in Windows, and nothing in the Mac bit.

WinRAR or 7-Zip depending on where I am. I have a copy of 7-Zip on my one of my tweaked flash drives just for random things I need to get done.

Just get WinRaR and ignore the trial limit.

I use Windows Explorer for zip files and Winrar for others (rar, 7z, etc) I find Winrar really simple you just open it and click extract. :D I think 7zip, Winace and Winzip are all installed on my PC for whatever reason.

I went from PKUNZIP to Winzip to Windows XP's built-in unzipper to 7-zip. It's free and legal to keep using. I can't argue with that.

For the Mac, I use The Unarchiver.

Winzip and WinRAR are not free though. They should not be used after their trial period has expired whether they allow you to or not.

7zip does all that the ones above do and is free.

WinAce

I also have WinRar, WinZip, and the dafault windows unzipper installed.

WinAce is also free, but works better than WinRar (and works on Rar files). You get the added option of making .ace files, which tend to be smaller than their zip equivalents, difficult for others to unzip (because they don't have WinAce - which can be a good thing), and are emailable through gmail (which zip files are not).

I get .zip files on Gmail.

You can't send .exe files with Gmail, even if you zip them or change its extension, but it works if you put the .exe file inside a folder and zip the folder.

Hmmm, I've never been able to send a zip file on gmail. Perhaps there is a receive-but-not-send situation.

Nope, I receive zip files from other Gmail users. I thought maybe it was because they were just forwarding the email and the original sender who attached the file used another email service, so I just zipped a .txt file and emailed to myself. It worked fine.

I think Gmail doesn't like you. :P

I'll have to try it.
