What's a good place to get a TV stand?

Sometime in the next few months, if all goes well, I'm going to take the plunge and finally upgrade to HDTV.

Before that happens, I want to get the other big purchase out of the way.. replacing my entertainment center. It's an old beasty.. nice and big. About five feet tall, six feet wide, with room for anything you'd want to put in it. But, it's "TV slot" is only big enough for a 36" standard TV. Nowhere near big enough to put a 47" widescreen LCD.

So, I want to go ahead and "prep" my living room by replacing it early, and just putting my old 27" Sanyo on it until I get the new one. Get all the other components in their places and so forth. DVD player, receiver, maybe the VCR if there's room. Figure out where the consoles will go, etc.

Bear with me, you know I like to provide backstory when I'm asking a question.. lol. :dopey:

So I'm shopping around, and these things are insanely priced. I mean, that big monstrosity I have in my living room? Hundred bucks. A little table with two shelves? Two hundred fifty. WTF?

Basically, I just need a basic shelf/stand, with enough room to put a receiver, DVD player, VCR, and the little switchbox I have some of my consoles running through. But I don't want to pay out the ass for it, either. Preferably black or silver, with a stand at least 30" wide (preferably larger), capable of supporting at least a hundred-pound TV. The HD I'm eyeballing is only seventy-eight pounds, but I'm not sure how much my current CRT weighs, and I like to leave a bit of room for error, since I'm probably going to put little knicknacks on it, too.

I found one on Wal-Mart's website that looks kind of nice:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5151029

A bit expensive, but nice and big, with plenty of space for everything. But, they don't stock it in the store, so I've got to pay shipping (which is probably going to be outrageous given it's weight).

I found two at Wal-Mart locally yesterday, when I went down there to do some shopping. Both were far cheaper than the one on the site, but neither was really perfect. One was silver/black, with a glass shelf for components.. 40" wide, plenty of room. But it was kind of.. plain. No drawers or doors or anything. The other was slightly smaller, 32" wide (the stand on the new TV will fit, but the TV itself will overhang on the sides). Component room on one side, door on the right for other stuff like the switchbox. That one also had a slot running across the top, beneath the main stand, where I could rack my games nice and neat. But it was wood-grain, which doesn't really go all that well with the black/silver electronics that will occupy it.

Any ideas? Any places I should look to spend about $100-150 on a decent stand, with all the ameneties and room for all my stuff?

If you are handy with tools, and can fabricate, making your own can not only get you exactly what you want, and for a lot less than if you had to buy a similar manufactuered stand, but it can also be a very satisfying experience.

As for some inexpensive, yet stylish TV stands, I would suggest IKEA, Eurway, or RoomStore.

Indeed. I was about to suggest KIA. Their prices are not that high and they are easy to install, aaand they are very durable. 👍

Ciao!

No IKEA anywhere near me, though. I'd like to get something locally if at all possible.

Found this one at Best Buy just now:

I have an advantage with the TV I'm looking at, though.. although it says it supports up to a 37" LCD, it's only talking about the physical width of the table, which is 39". But the stand on the 47" Westinghouse is only about 28" wide, it's not the full width of the television. Advantage: Me. And well in my price range, too. Think I'll swing by the store later and see what it looks like in person.

How about checking the clearance section of a furniture store? They should have something.

That looks good Jedi 👍 I agree, you should go and check it out by yourself.

I did.. but they only have one, and it's still in the box.. lol.

On the flip side, the box has been opened, so they're going to let me have it for only sixty bucks. I'll be going back there on payday. :)

Now all I need's a TV to put it on... (edit: to put ON it.. LOL).. trying to figure out the least-painful way to go into debt over it.
