The Mk.1 is indeed a good car, but considering in the first post of this thread Mazda6sTuner was talking about getting an '00-'02 Tacoma/Ranger, I think he'd get a newer Golf, or even the new Rabbit. ;)

For that price range he is talking about, he is practically in range for a brand-new Rabbit, maybe a few dollars short. Either way, hatchbacks or wagons with the correct configuration can hold quite a lot of stuff, the only major difference being that they really can't haul a lot of stuff similar to a pickup.

If you do end up looking at Volkswagens, I highly suggest investing in spring stoppers to prevent tire rub. I know it was a problem on the MKIV models, and I would assume much the same for the rest of the crowd. I personally keep looking for an MKIV Jetta GLS Wagon with the 1.8T and a stick, as IMO it is nearly a perfect car (fun to drive, capability, relatively "quick").

If you really want to be cool (others might call you awkward), you go for the TDI models...

I want a TDI in the worst way, don't listen to anyone that says they are slow. They are no sports car but they aren't slow.

Why not an amazing collaboration between truck and hatch?

My grandpa used to have a diesel model! good little truck!

of course, it's probably too old. I'd actually reccommend a late '80s, early '90s S-10 4.3, simply because it'll cost a good bit less, will still look good, and will run quite well.

and what about the Dakota? V8, anyone?

-> I have to point out on some things:

1. Frontier S/C = Yes its beefy, but that requires premium fuel, plus on top of that so-so gas mileage.

2. Dakota V8 = Yes it can tow a lot, quite a looker too, but V8 + gas um, forget it. Plus reliability is an another so-so.

-> Looks like this thread is straying away from pickup to wagons.

-> I can highly recommend any Jetta TDI Wagons if you're concerned about gas/crude mileage; Any Impreza or Legacy wagon for AWD traction; and any Volvo's no lower than a 850 should be good enough for hauling a lot of stuff without driving a gargantuan. :)

Hey I own a Caddy.:dopey: They really car cool little things. They took a Rabbit, chopped it's butt off, made it a little long, and added a sold rear axle. It's certainly no speed demon though, I have the N/A diesel and when you push the pedal to the metal it's not exactly "exhilarating" but it's a fun car. In fact I just got finished packing a pile of brush larger than the truck itself in the back. IMO these cars with a 1.9TDI or 16v swap are awesome, I've been told that a 1.9TDI in these light things could pull high 13's to low 14's and still get 50mpg.

Cool, do you happen to know where I may be able to purchase one of these?

I ask because gas is gonna be killer in a few years.

What about a Subaru Baja? Grab one used.

^ Baja is also a good choice (a car with a pickup bed that has AWD), but will he be concerned about that "tiny pickup bed" issue?

Mazda6sTuner-> I think that the Baja is a good choice, it is recommended by Consumer Reports and not much sold out there so you'll get a good deal on those too. (:

Why would it be a Vehicular Mullet? Its not a redneck car. Its a soft-road Pickup.

Yeah. For that matter, why is the 3rd gen Camaro a Vehicular Mullet? Its not a redneck car. Its a road racing sports car.[/sarcasm]
In any case, if the El Camino was a "soft-road pickup" instead of a "Monte Carlo with a empty box instead of a trunk," than the Jeep Wrangler is an "AWD Club Racer."

I just found one, but its really rusty. :yuck:

EDIT: I was talking about the Baja. :(

Applies just the same, but replace "Monte Carlo with an empty box instead of a trunk" with "Subaru Outback with the rear glass sliced off."
