I don't think that's quite what he meant
On a more serious note. An X-Port, and the now discontinued Sharkport, for one thing allow users to save memory card data onto a PC hard drive. This enables you to e-mail ghost lap times, replay saves and your garage to users around the globe (provided they have the same type of game as yourself: NTSC <--> PAL)
The typical memory card carries 8MB of storage vs. however large your computer's disk is. You could even wipe clean your memory card and start a game or games over but still have your data backed up on your computer for a later use.
A data transfer cable (X-Port/Sharkport) paired along with Mk's editor can create hybrid vehicles. Nearly any part off one car can be 'fitted' onto another. Sick of not having a supercharged Camaro SS? No problem. Use one of the superchargers from the 3 cars that have one stock: Jaguar XKR, Aston Martin V8 Vantage or Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 or twin turbo a Viper to create your own Hennessey Viper Venom 800 (830+ HP from the tuner Roger Hennessey)
X-Ports and/or Sharkports are sometimes requested when participating in an online racing series to prove a lap time. If you save your replay file to computer and e-mail it to somebody, they can not only watch your replay, but can also open it in Mk's editor and see what parts were fitted on any car in the replay to verify its legality.
