Saying you could care less implies that you care some, if not a lot. Saying you couldn't care less means that you do not care at all.

Pretty much what Neon said. It all goes about what you really want to see. If you either care or not.

I couldn't care less means the thing is important to you
I could care less means the thing isn't really important or significant to you

make sense?

ok, to clarify
eg: I couldn't care less about my girlfriend = I care alot for my girlfriend
I could care less about my girlfriend = I don't care or I care abit, or I care alot, but i'm not showing that i care alot

I always considered "...could care less" to be "I don't give a hoot". I never really used "...couldn't care less" because I had no real need to use the phrase because I use plenty of others to get my points across.

I always took 'I could care less' to be sarcastic - as in 'as if I could care less', hence making it pretty well equivalent to 'I couldn't care less'.

Couldn't care less = either it's morally impossible to care less(you don't care at all) or you care to the point of careing that careing less is impossible.

Could care less = careing as is, it's important.

That's how I think anyway...I rarely use that.

I could not care less. It means that you could not care less about something. i.e. I couldn't care less is equivelent to not caring at all about something.

I could care less - meaning you do care about something.

This isn't something you can really interpret, there is only one set meaning. Unless the words I, could, not, care, and less have new meanings that I am unaware of.

Simple.

Ahh - but Klos, as you have clearly demonstrated on numerous occasions, the simple meaning of words, and how those words are actually interpreted or indeed intended are often very different things.
