whats with all the stats

why on gods earth are american sports sooo full of stats ? sh#t baseball is packed with them !! batting averages ect.ect.ect.
why do you guys have to analyze everything to death with numbers .. he's hit 72 bla bla's this year out of 403 balls so he's got 0.436 average .. who the hell cares ?

honestly why can't you judge how good a player is by watching his performance more.. in football ( soccer ) there is at least half , probably more , the stats in most us sports. we like to watch the players in the match , not sit with our calculators...
 
i hate american sports....baskekball baseball all that cr@p...

when its on i just switch over....

the only americans i like to watch in sport are the Tour de France riders....but thats only with the British commentary teams...i would hate to think of the Euro bashing that goes on in the American commentary...

yes, there is an obsession with stats and thats why i dont watch....i would rather see the guys rated on thier performance and not how many times they dropped the ball etc...
 
it just makes sense to me.. you watch a game of any sport, ( by the way i happen to enjoy some american sports ) , and you say, well that guy played well , but tommy tucker over there was cr#p , little jonny boy is one for the future.... ect.. you don't need 10 different kind of stats on each player to know if they're good or not.

one guy once said about stats: stats can say anything you want them to depending on how you look at them... and thats true .. if you know anything about your particular sport you don't need all these stats, so come on americans .. PAY ATTENTION ( just joking ) :dunce:

Why dont all you damn foreniers (<---i think theres a "g" somewhere in there) not watch North American sports and quite your damn complaining, stats are all part of the game and if you dont like it then go watch professional darts!

theyre worthless in the scope of world sport....

Stats are used to grade how well a player has played over a certain time. They help to objectify a player's performance. Instead of throwing subjective words around like "he's good" or "he sucks" you can just look at their stats to see where they fit in with everyone else.

It is also important when you want to compare two players from different eras who never played a game together. Take Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds for example. Babe Ruth is regarded by many (not me) as the greatest baseball player ever. And his statistics back this up. Barry Bonds, a current elite baseball player has broken some of Babe Ruth's coveted records and could be considered one of the greatest baseball players ever because of it.

Stats are very important. I don't watch a game with my calculator, because none of these stats are at all complicated in the least.

listen Winnipeg Wonder boy, i am not saying the sports are bad in any way ( the actual playing of them ) but in football , ( soccer) we just know who is a good player through good old fashioned WATCHING THEM ... take away all your stats in your sports and you wouldn't have the slightest clue who was your top players !!

tut tut... where would you be without your computers .. huh??
 
You can tell who the greatest player of 1905 was without stats?! Amazing!

I do envy you with your knowledge of every single player ever.
 
your just not getting it at all are you? obviously there are stats that are kept in every sport.. my point is that in american sports , they are saturated with them compared to football.. i have never said that i know every player ever but i am saying that without looking at the stats i could tell you who the most valuable players in football are.. ( i don't mean in money either )

please listen carefully next time.. i never said stats weren't important, only why do you guys have so much of them?
 
I already said why. It keeps the game as objective as possible. Of course, even with all the stats, some subjectivity is to be expected.
 
To the best of my knowledge, most US sports announcers do not bash Europe. This may be surprising, but anti Europeanism is usually a reaction, fairly or not, for not siding with us on an issue, or calling us various synonyms for stupid, blasting how we run our domestic affairs, or just plain being snobbish.

I'm curious, how did the papers in Britain cover the California recall election?

I'm not big on stats either, btw.
 
I hope they covered it with the same journalistic objectivity as news stations did over here!

I've used the word 'objectivity' about 257 times in this thread.
