Pretty simple really. As I reach my mid 30's, I start to wonder if people actually are able to get into their dream or ideal cars in their lifetime's. Depending on the desire, this could be either a really difficult thing or an easy one. Just curious to everyone else's experiences. I'll simultaneously share my current journey on getting into my dream car.

If you aren't in your dream car, mind sharing why? What are the barriers you are running into? Money? Availability? Please share.

For me, my dream is to be in a 2013-2016 Aston Martin DB9. I have been in love with the DB9 since I was in High School. And I am just reaching a place in my life financially where it is actually obtainable. I am planning on making an offer on a 2015 model for the year is over. I'll more than likely record my whole process and put it on FB. Forgive me if I start crying.

That is actually amazing, really happy for you!
And yeah, the later DB9 is gorgeous, so I approve!
As for my dream car, well, it's complicated but I've always wanted to try and own a variety of cars in my lifetime, so it's difficult to choose; the only certain thing for me is, that I'm trying to pursue a stable financial situation first.

Wonderful to here! And I'm glad you approve.

Financial stability has been a big thing for me, recently. Where I come from, I was never taught how to manage money or build wealth. So I am learning mostly on my own. Better late than never, though. I am learning about investing, and creating new sources of income.

The priority of of course, having stability, but the benefit will be being able to live the life I truly desire now in my 30's, and not when I'm 70 trying to live out my glory days. That includes the dream car! :)

Good luck on the DB9, if I recall they are relatively affordable today considering what you get and how much they were new. A friend of mine is looking to get an early V8 Vantage for that reason.

I've had many dream cars, most I would not be able to afford in my lifetime (Ferrari F40 for example). However, I've also had some more reasonable dream cars such as a Subaru STI, a car I obsessed over in my teens, which I did own and sadly sell in my early 20s. Wish I kept it.

Right now, my dream car is a Porsche GT3, preferably the second gen 996 model, which, who knows, may be possible down the road sometime. It's not really a part of my thought process at the time because I want a house and to focus on other financial responsibilities.

Probably a 987 Boxster Spyder, silver on red - the sort of ultimate evolution of my 986. I think they will probably bottom out around $40-45k near term before they begin to appreciate, if things continue as they have in recent memory. I would definitely consider that to be a forever car. I could technically afford one now...but it doesn't seem prudent to buy one if I don't have a house first. I also want to start a business in the next few years so spending money on such things is a little counterproductive.

My dream car has several “teirs”, so that I always have a goal. My first dream car is a really nice, white ND MX-5. Not sure if i prefer the soft top or the coupe so we will have to see. :D

My second dream car is a gen 2 Lotus Elise. If I ever buy one of these, I don't think I will ever want to sell it. Its been a dream of mine since i was 7 playing the original NFS MW. It is pretty much my favorite car ever made (tied with the next one) and I will probably never change my mind on that.

My third goal is a circa 2012 Lotus Exige S Roadster. I think this thing is prety much my idea of a perfect car; stylish, pretty, elegant, light and plenty of power. They are, however, pricey as, so i’d be surprised if I can ever afford to own one. But I’ll certainly try.

Fourth is a manual Aston Martin Vantage (the new one). I pretty much know I will never own one, but yeah, they're just absolutely stunning.

Finally is probably the Pagani Huayra. I will never, ever be able to afford one of these, and they will likely be the only car on this list that will forever increase in price getting further and further out of reach. A shame, but I’ve accepted it :D

I will definitely try my hardest to own all of these, but I know for sure that I will one day own an Elise. I just have to

The MX-5 will probably come in the next 5 years though, and I can’t wait.

I have a laundry list of vehicles I’d like to own in my lifetime, many of which I would probably never afford. One thing for sure is, since I was about six or seven, I have always wanted a classic Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle). It’s a car I love and I honestly can’t think of a car that I love more. I’m in college currently and I definitely can’t afford much at the moment but in the near future I can probably obtain maybe a 60s or 70s Beetle. But my dream Bug would definitely have to be a Split Window (1945-53) or Oval Window (1953-1957) model. Not really affordable cars anymore but not unobtainable.
upload_2020-9-16_0-3-18.jpeg

I’d definitely like a kit car in my lifetime of something like a Ford GT40 MK IV, Shelby Cobra, or a Porsche 356. Cars I really love that I could never afford to own their authentic counterparts.
upload_2020-9-15_23-59-57.jpeg

Exner designed ‘Forward look’ Mopars (1955-1961) are a real treat to me. They’re getting more and more expensive but the right models are still affordable.
upload_2020-9-16_0-0-58.png

And finally, I’d like something prewar. I’m not sure if I’d like a brass era pioneer like a Ford T or a nice sport tourer like a BMW 327 from the 1930s. Almost anything prewar would be cool.

I'm surprised how cheap early DB9s have become. Looking on AutoTrader 2005/2006 models are down at around the £26k region. 2013+ ones are nearer £60k, which is what i was expecting.

My dream car is a 2000 Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport. Specifically chassis 17/25 with the 'SuperSport' marking actually on the car.
image-asset.jpeg

Mercedes-Benz-CLK-GTR-SS_20029.jpg

My main barrier is both money and availability; as even if I were to acquire the funds required to purchase the car '$4m for a regular GTR -$7m+ for a SuperSport', the car would be next to impossible to find unless it popped up for sale.

I would be willing to settle for a regular CLK-GTR though as it's a more likely option to find if I were in the position to purchase a GTR.
ER8FiHLXkAA9gm7.jpg

My second dream car is a yellow or red Ferrari F50 with black headlights, I feel like the car is far more attractive ith the black headlights option and if I were to own a F50 without it that would probably be the only thing I would change on it .
aa0295bde984040807d8cf6c523fa794.jpg

Even though these have gotten very expensive, it's actually not hard to find a F50 for sale at all granted you have enough money to purchase and maintain the car.

My third dream car is a Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0, this is a far more affordable option but it's still out of my price range as of right now. There is almost always a few for sale so if I come into a position to purchase the funds i'll be guaranteed to be able to purchase one.

Fourth dream car would be a orange Koenigsegg CCX, I love everything about this car ad IMO it's the perfect Koenigsegg, it's not overstyled like the current ones but it's still aggressive enough without looking OTT. I specifically chose orange because I feel like that;s the perfect color for the car much like the F1 LM.
Koenigsegg_CCX_roadster_%282010-10-16%29_01.jpg

Fifth and final main dream car would be the McLaren F1 GT. Just like the CLK-GTR the main problems are both cost and availability. The F1 LM cost 60 Million IIRC to purchase from McLaren MSO so I could only imagine how much a GT would go for. Unless i'm a billionaire, nothing can justify paying that much for a car, atleast not to me. Not to mention IIRC there's only 3 of these in the world with McLaren owning one and another in Brunei. So sadly this will probably stay a dream car.

Mk1 Mini Cooper S

In reaching my goal, I'm right where I am. Not close and not far.
Some years ago, me and my wife,a spent all our money on our defunct art gallery, sold her Megane, left Melbourne and been figuring what we want to do next.

We've been looking at vans, wagons for my wife and the Jimny(I'd like one, but not keen being on a waiting list). She's all for me getting my Mini, especially with us having an indoor garage spot in our new place. However, Minis are ridiculously expensive here, in Australia. We'll see.

I always wanted a C4. Had plenty of models and Hot Wheels cars and always used them in games when I could and never thought the C5 looked nearly as nice.

And then I bought one, so...

The ones I have left are a Esprit V8 and a Kei car. The former is still relatively inexpensive, so I think that's probably something I'll try for in the next decade. I plan on buying an Alto Works sometime next year or so; having decided I'd prefer that over a Pajero Mini.

Would want one with the Corolla taillights instead of the later Elise ones.

I must have a thing for cars with the handbrake on the left.

An E46 M3 in Laguna Seca Blue with the matching leather is my 'achievable' dream car, but I feel it's already creeping out of my price range.

Realistically, I shall probably replace my B7 2.0T with the V8 S4, again in convertible form. I've wanted a V8 for as long as I can remember and I'm totally sold on open top motoring now.

That LFA!!

You guys all have some very interesting dream cars! Way more than what I bargained for. As a nod to what you guys are doing, I'll also post a few more that are probably going to remain dreams for me, at least in the foreseeable future. From least to greatest expense;

Aston Martin Vanquish S
Scratching the same itch I have for the DB9, but maybe turned up a notch or two. As with the DB9,

I'll post more and edit this post.

Might as well post a picture:

When I was in college ~10 years ago, my dream cars were these two - which at the time could be had in good condition for around $30k. Sadly, that is very much not the case and I'm afraid I've missed out on both.

As you can see, I like compact (but not tiny) sports cars with the engine somewhere behind the driver and genuine consideration towards every day useability (well minus the tent on the 987 ). As much as I find something like a Ferrari F355 or 360 interesting, I feel like they are just gratuitously wide. If Toyota makes a new MR2 in the spirit of the ones that came before, that could very well be my dream car. I've even considered a ZZW30 but they really don't have any storage in them..

My achievable dream car has been a Ford Mustang GT 5.0.

I've been actively trying to pursue a 2015 model with the auto box for several years since it arrived in the UK, but have been waiting for my finances to try and stabalise for potentially making another serious look.

I'm a simple lad with eccentric tastes, no license, and barely competent in saving $$$ stopping me. With that in mind, wouldn't say no to either a Toyota Sera or C5 Corvette as "reasonable car to own that I <3". Would most likely lean C5.

Wouldn't say no to an S-Cargo or Midget II for the hell of it.

If somehow I get "MOVE OVER POOR PEOPLE" money, sole major splurge car-wise would be a C8 Corvette, RS6 Avant, and/or M-B SLS.

I have two dream cars. I already bought one and a few months ago I was in the process of getting the second dream car.

The first one I bought in 2014 is ............ don't laugh a Fiat 500 Twin Air with black instead of white interior parts of course.
The second one is a Porsche 991.2 but has to be a C4 or GTS because I like the wide body. Or the new Porsche 992. There are other Porsches that I really like and want but I have to make a choice and would go for the 991.2 or the 992.

I have no idea why I can't make a decision regarding the Porsche. I think my psychological issues has a lot to do with it. And I currently don't have enough indoor space for another car.

I wanted to update you all on my progress of my pursuit of my dream car, and I am going to be very open and candid about this. My goal is that you too can possibly pursue your car dreams/fantasy, and not have to wait until you are old and retired to enjoy that.

I am 34 years old.
I work in IT in government.
I do not have a Degree.
I am married, and combined we make about $150k+ currently in yearly income.
I have very little debt, outside of our current vehicles. We had a home mortgage, and sold that home a few months ago.

My only immediate hold up in securing the car I want is my Credit Score, which do to some personal things (which I am open to share if anyone ask), my Credit Score took some big hits. I am currently skating just under 700, and that is nowhere near where it needs to be to get the exotic car specific financing I desire.

I am financing over trying to purchase the car outright due to not wanting to throw all that cash at an asset that in the short term (and possibly long), wont make me any money. Instead I will take all my free cash and invest it in other assets and tools. My spouse and I are both comfortable with having monthly car debts, if it means we are in the exact cars we desire, and don't have to worry too much about unscheduled maintenance cost.

I am currently utilizing every trick and tool I can to raise my score back up;
-Sent letters to the Bureaus to have missed payments removed.
-Disputed Hard Inquiries on my Credit Report I am not aware of, or did not give permission for.
-Utilizing a few services that use your payment history to raise your score (like Experian Boost).
-Lowering my current Credit Card Utilization to well under 16%, and paying off a shared loan between myself and my spouse.

This is all for the goal of getting an A1 score (780-850), and getting a superb loan from a place that specializes in Classic and Exotic Car loans, like Woodside Credit.

I don't have a hope in hell of obtaining any of my dream cars, the ones that I used to have on the bedroom wall as a kid or from playing Need for Speed. Not unless I miraculously won the lottery, particularly with the Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina I used to lust over in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2.

My attainable dream car though, and it might not even be attainable much longer with the way the market is going, is surprisingly enough an updated Lexus IS-F.

And I would love to pursue that once I own my own home first.

Those are nice! I used to have a Lexus RC, and it was very high quality in that interior. Comfortable place to be. Any immediate plans towards getting it? We are in similar spots, although I just sold my home. But I am planning to get another one in a few years.

I feel exactly the same way about my actual dream cars being not so realistically obtainable. I feel like I have too many to really list for my full on dream car(s). Some have been listed in here like the CLK GTR and Lexus LFA. Some others that come to mind are the new/current Alpine A110 Premiere, Porsche Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo, BMW E39 M5, Toyota Supra A80,

You definitely had the one that was originally my reasonably obtainable dream car. :p Though not too long ago it changed to the Lexus GS F. I have a pretty specific spec too as I am picky about my colors. It HAS to be in Ultrasonic Blue 2.0 for me.
2020-lexus-gs-f-carbuzz-346785.jpg

Another reasonable one oddly is the third generation BMW Z4 M40i. Working at the BMW dealership has given me an appreciation for it. I love the way they look and fairly recently I've grown a desire to own a convertible. I never used to care for convertibles, but my friend let me experience several.
p90317989_highres-jpg.452121

An odd but very reasonable one that I did actually get to own was the first generation Lexus IS300. More specifically the Sportcross wagon/estate. Fell in love with the "weird taillights" (what I called them as a kid) when playing Gran Turismo 2. Even though they only had the sedan back then in GT2, but when I learned that a wagon existed in the US, I had to have it. Hunted for two years until I managed to find a clean one locally. (The Sportcross did not sell well in the US, so they're hard to find). Unfortunately after 4 years of ownership, things got a little more difficult with a bit of a lifestyle change. Problems were getting expensive and my needs had changed, so I ended up having to sell it. I would have kept it and fixed the problems, so the price of repairs wasn't really the issue, more of having a newer more "reliable" and efficient car that I could trust for longer drives. But if I ever come to the time of having money and space, I'd buy one again in a heartbeat. (As a second/third car) Just hope prices stay reasonable and they aren't all destroyed or modified.
sportcross_street_by_medigoflame_dc2otim-fullview.jpg

Growing up and throughout my teenage years, I was incredibly fond of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. They still hold a special place in my heart, but I wouldn't say I am actively pursuing them. Even if I had the ability to buy one, the running costs and dated interior would put me off owning one... At least in the long term.

Nowadays, my ultimate dream cars are the McLaren 720S (765LT more recently) and Porsche 911 Turbo S (992). These are poster cars more than anything and I'm not really working towards owning either of them. Ideally, I would like to drive these in an enthusiastic manner at least once instead.

If I had to mention one car that ticks all my boxes without a stratospheric price tag, I would go with the 2020 Audi RS4 Avant.
a1913281_large.jpg

It's not a car I'm saving up towards but if I was to come across a sudden windfall of cash, that's taking priority! :D

That's crazy, we're the same! A 930/964 and NA1 hardtop are my biggest dream cars as well, missed out on the low costs lasting, and now I'm certain an '09-'12 Cayman (base model, to avoid headaches of direct injection; I'll just boost power) will be my next car. A 981 has my attention a bit because I'm in love with that interior design, but I want this kind of car as 'raw' as possible. Money doesn't motivate me enough to go after a crazy job that pays enough to afford the 911 or NSX; I'd rather get a house with a nice garage setup to keep working on my Hondas, haha.

If you've seen my personal car thread, I'm also keen on the 981 cars. I've noticed base manual 981 Boxsters falling into the high 20k range lately with relatively low miles. There's one actually near me for sale (Lapis blue on tan interior - great combo!) for $29k and I'm very tempted to go look at it. I have a hard time seeing 981s ever going below $20k - the 986 and 987 cars only did because of the IMS issue combined with a very large supply secondhand. 981s seem like tremendous value right now. I'm very curious to see how they drive vs my 986, which aside from being slow, is damn near perfect.

I get the cool factor. But like Jeeps, I just can't get over the price. Almost bought one last week, but $10K+ for one is just absurd.
Well they’re officially classic/collector vehicles now. And prices will most likely keep climbing as it ages. Pick one up while you can. They’re very cool SUVs.

There's two I considered "attainable" until recently:

I had the chance to buy an NSX 10-ish years ago, but after much debate regarding budget (and the fact my wife was pregnant with our second child) I decided against it... it's now worth twice what I would have payed for it. :(

And the 911 Turbo well... I've basically given up on that.

I have been looking at the new BMW M3 and the Audi RS4 Avant. I'm sure about the BMW but that Audi RS4 Avant. The M3 has one advantage over the Audi, it has a manual. A Porsche is will be my favorite car.

That 993 turbo above is one of the most beautiful 911's but so expensive. :scared:
