What's your race game history ?

Mods, if this thread is in the wrong category please move, thx.

I was just wondering what other people played before GT4 (or since) ?
What led you to buy and play GT4 ?

For me (I might be considered an old fart after this :dopey: ) these were the key games:

- 4d stunts driving: Back in the days of the trusty 386 PC's this was the game for me. Not for realisme, but for the fun of building your own track.

- Grand Prix (Microprose): Onward to the 486 era. Excellent game, lots of hours of playtime on that one.

Than I lost interest in racing games for a while, I played strategy games until I got into Mafia. Let's call these my "racing Dark Ages". :)

-Mafia: Not a racing game, but a storyline first person shooter, set in the 1920's-chicago era, in which some driving was required. But there was one mission where I had to take a twenties racecar around a track, and finish first.

- Need for speed underground 2. Now I know this game maybe frowned upon by a community of hardcore racing fanatics, but in my defense: I got this game for free. Played it for a little while. The only real fun bit, was the track race.

And then my brother came over to my house with a black box marked "Sony", two controllers and a little game called Gran Turismo 3.💡

- GT3: Bought a Playstation, GT3 and from then I was hooked.

- GT4: When GT4 was released bought it the day it was released (in europe). Couldn't put the controller down for a couple of weeks. Haven't stopped playing since. Started a new game about 2 months ago, still hooked.

- FIA GTR: What GT4 lacks in realisme, this game makes up for it. But obviously this is just one class of racing. And there are no prize cars:dunce: .

So that was my little list, lets hear some of yours !!

I think it actually really began with GT1, my friend had a PS and GT1 so after a while I bought one myself and got GT1. Later on I got GT2. (those were the only two games I ever had for my PS.)

Then I kind of stopped playing for a while, until I read about GT4 and it would feature the Nürburgring Nordschleife :)

So I prebooked GT4 and bought a PS2, and GT3 too keep me busy until GT4 arrived :dopey:

This might get moved to the "Gaming in General" forum, but then again, it might not. :)

My racing game history is pretty large, 'cause I've played a lot of them...

- Outrun: 'Nuff said. :)

- Nintendo's F-Zero: I unwittingly learned the concepts of the racing line and drifting from this game.

- EA's The Need for Speed: Yeah, it used to have a "the." This was the first one, where they had Road & Track work with them on making it. It was simulation-ish, and of course had the cop chases. It's funny to confuse NFSU kids when you explain that NFS1 had Japanese cars (NSX, Supra, RX-7).

- EA's Need for Speed series: I continued on buying the rest of the games in the series, but none of them can live up to the original (Porsche Unleashed and Hot Pursuit come close, with Most Wanted in a somewhat distant third).

- Midway's San Francisco Rush, arcade version: Another simulation-ish (for its time) game, this one had strong force feedback which made landing the massive jumps a little more difficult.

- Namco's Ridge Racer (series): Classic arcade racer, with unbeatably simple and intuitive gameplay mechanics. Fun as hell. :) Introduced me to the concept of drifting.

- Microsoft's Midtown Madness: Featured checkpoint-to-checkpoint racing through a somewhat accurate representation of Chicago, without a pre-defined track. I loved the open-endedness.

- Midway's Hard/Race Drivin': A really old, surprisingly simulation-like arcade game, with a turn-key starter, clutch, four-speed tranny, and an unforgiving damage system -- going too fast and grabbing too much air over a jump would cause you to crash as you landed. I didn't know about this game when it first came out, I discovered it much later.

- Sierra's Viper Racing: A surprisingly realistic game, with full clutch simulation and body deformation in crashes.

- Gran Turismo 3: For the longest time I was skeptical of the series and its "grocery getter cars," sticking to my high-speed NFS games, until I rented a PS2 and GT3, and became absolutely hooked. I thought GT3 was the most realistic driving game on the planet for a while. After my sister got a PS2, I bought GT3.

- Live for Speed: Hoo boy, was I wrong about GT3. This is the real deal, and I quickly became addicted to this, especially since GT3 had lost a lot of its appeal. I now have S2, and there's simply no game that can compete.

- Initial D Arcade Stage: I played this to death for a while, and was fairly dominant at my arcade. Now I've grown tired of its confusingly unrealistic and unfun physics.

- PGR2: Taught me all about the Nürburgring, from countless hours spent there on X-BOX Live.

- Sega GT 2002: Helped teach me to appreciate obscure Japanese and European sportscars, especially older ones (80's and earlier).

- Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune: Similar to Initial D Arcade Stage, but with the Wangan Midnight manga instead of Initial D. It takes place on the Tokyo metropolitan highway system (think Tokyo Xtreme Racer), and is a hell of a lot more fun to play than Initial D. It's a more balanced game, too.

- Gran Turismo 4: Despite having become quite sick of GT3's poor physics (now that I had learned more, and knew better), I eagerly anticipated GT4. I was severely disappointed to learn that it was just GT3-and-a-half.

- Enthusia: Wow, almost-Live-for-Speed-like physics in a console package with licensed cars and the Nürburgring?? I nearly had a heartattack when I discovered that the E30 M3 was in it. I couldn't get enough of it when it came out, and I still play it today. I hope a sequel is in the works...

- Forza: Whoopee. Other than the excellent customization and online play, this is nothing but a mediocre/decent arcade racer pretending to be a simulator, with horribly inaccurate driving physics and real-world track modelling.

- Soon: Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift: Despite the silly name, and the questionable quality considering it's yet another Genki product (makers of the rest of the TXR series), I'm looking forward to this one. It'll be like TXR, but in the mountains. Comes out Mar. 14th.

I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting, but that list is too long as it is...

MY first was

EA's NFS 3 i loved it
then came NFS 4 always played it since
then i saw GT1 came i played every day
THEN GT2 that was like  for me never stopped with it
GT3 same thing
F1 challenge plyed sometimes and F1 career was a good game too
GT4 was like  for me and it still is

FIA GTR is Brilliant too but very hard you know

the first game i played was RAGE racer and to this day i have never finished it.
then the GT series
auto modalissa (meh you know what i mean)
more of the GT series
now im playing Enthusia and GT4

it probably started earlier but my memory is blank :)
the first racing game i can remember at this very moment is road rash
i know its bikes but its racing all the same, then add chains etc....
this really appealed to me 👍
was it the racing or violence? hmmm
anyway i normally stuck to shooters but then along came gt!
there the only racing games ive had
(other than road rash)

It all started back when I was 8, playing Test Drive, from there, I was hooked. You name it, and i've probably played it. My current line up of about 15-20 bought PS2 games is nothing but racing games, mostly completed if not completed, with only 2 non-racing games in the library, yet you do drive in the one (GTA:SA).

Don't know why i'm so hooked, but I don't see the addiction going away anytime soon.

It all started with the demo we recieved with the PS1.
The F1 game by Psygnosis was on it.

No need to say that I bought the game a few days later.:sly:
The next game I got was F1 97. I bought a MadCatz steering wheel
to go with it. Never used a regular controller again (except for GT1&GT2)

*Some more games for PS1: F1 98-99,Colin Mc Rae 1-2,
Destruction Derby 2, Porsche Challenge
*PS2: GT3, GT4, RBR, Enthusia

Now I'm starting to play GTR &RBR on the PC too.

Steering wheels I had:
'96 or '97: Madcatz
ACT Labs wheel
Thrustmaster FF wheel (the ferrari one)
DFP

Before GT4 was NFSUG, before was GT3 but i only did .5% till it was stolen. and before that NFSHP, before that Mega Races, sooooo old.

When I got my PS2 and GT3+ Jack and Daxter, I was first hooked on jack and daxter, didn't really like GT3 yet, it was like nice but it didn't seem much other than VERY nice looking.

Then I went to Gran Turismo option one day, I discovered licenses, cars to buy, VERY MUCH CARS TO BUY. Test tracks, all kinds of settings and stuff, only 10000 to spend but already drooling at the race cars.
I bought a trueno, didn't know drifting yet though, but I raced it and got some money.

The thing is, when I began playing it was like damn hard, never played a racing game before, braking, understeer oversteer whateva, racing lines, all new to me so it seemed like the racing cars would be impossible for me to get.
Then I bought a Silvia, then a Silvia Aero, and then won the turbo cup and in one race I won an infiniti RX-7 and it looked like a DAMN DAMN fast car in my eyes:dunce: I was really proud and in love with it.

Then there was a period of racing again and then was the moment where I began to make money, much money, and kept saying "I wanna buy a skyline:drool::D" then I had 50000 and I wondered if I could save up for a porsche, it would take long but lets just try. So then I had 80000 and then the lotus esprit became my target: "it really does look damn fast..." then I got the money and I wanted to save up for a Jaguar, then I saved up another 40000 to afford a beatifull Aston Martin:drool:

I bought both of them by buying them and not saving again, and tested them at Grand Valley, it was a real experience. Jag or Aston? Wich color? I bought a blueish Aston Martin eventually, and I was in LOVE:drool:

Then the next period of awsomeness was when I finally made money for a beautifull stunning damn nice superb Nissan Penzoill Nismo. I even asked my mum wich car she liked best and what to buy. The Nismo looked like a tiger and damn it was worth it:drool:

I'll never forget it...:embarrassed:

Thats why GT4 was a dissapointment, I never had these kinda things there, money was earned too easily damnit...

Well i used to play only PC games for a long time. Then all the PC games just started to feel boring and lack depth. Then i found this random article about GT4 and got really interested (this was long after the release). So i found the game from a bargain bin and fired up my good 'ol trusty PS2 and had a nice surprize :) I were familiar with GT series on PSX and that made me to want it even more.

My racing game history?

That's hard to say really.
I mean, Mario Kart and F-Zero on the super nintendo were both great games that I played.

Those aren't necessarily the earliest games for me either... I am sure I've been playing racing games for as long as I can remember.

Even Aryton Senna's racing game for the Sega Genesis made it into my hands. :D

However, nothing really holds a candle to my GT gaming. :dopey:
When did that start?

Pizza Hut gave out a Playstation Underground Demo Disc that had several titles on it before they were released.
Einhander, Tomb Raider 2, Crash The Bandicoot, and of course, GT 1.

I bought all those games I listed (and I know the demo had others on it that I didn't mention).

GT1 was on that demo disc and the only thing it had was 2 playable cars and one playable track.
The NSX and the Vette at High Speed Ring.

After I played it I thought it was horrible (at first).
Over the next few days I kept trying and eventually I started to run semi-clean laps and with those faster, cleaner laps came enjoyment.

Once I started to enjoy GT1 on the demo it was over... I was hooked.
I rented GT1 and beat every last bit of the game.
Back then I still wasn't a very big GT gamer so I played my normal games and only rented GT1.

When GT2 came out I had to buy it. The improvements were too vast for me to ignore and so I bought GT2.
Sure enough I was hooked even worse than ever.

Played GT2 for the longest time. In fact, I was still playing GT2 when GT3 came out. :D

Finally, the summer before I signed up here (which would be summer of 2002), I bought a PS2.
Then, after the school semester had ended I bought GT3 and found this place while I was looking for a prize car list.

Eventually I got involved in the WRS and since then I've been playing pretty much only GT.

Went through a few need for speed phases where a rental would provide my fill of arcade racing but in the end I always came back to GT.

Now GT4 is out and I can't think of anything on a playstation that will take me away from GT.

Maybe enthusia is worth a try?

In any case, GT4 is my favorite of the GT games and GT is my favorite of all racing games.

So that's my story.

Btw, I moved this thread to the gaming in general forum since I knew this topic could cover several game console generations and brand names.

Have fun with the conversation.

My racing history started with Microprose's Grand Prix and Grand Prix 2, i was just hooked on the 2nd one winning championships by taking the braking help off.

After GP2, I bought myself Accolade's Test Drive 4, I saved for months for that game and it had the bonus on my fav car on the cover, the Viper. I loved that car for the wide array of cars there were, Vipers, Cobras, Hemi Cudas, hell even a Mini called the Pitbull special.

Around that time I got into consoles more than ever before, starting with the Saturn I had Sega Rally, Wipeout 2097, Hardcore 4x4... all the while also buying more PC games, such as NASCAR Revolution, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season (great nascar game) Star Wars Ep1 Racer, TOCA 2 Touring Cars (which was AWESOME), Motocross Madness1&2, Monster Truck Racing 2 (which was also good), Grand Prix Legends, Driver, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, NFS Road Challenge, NFS Porsche, Sports Car GT Carmageddon2, some lesser known ones such as DethKarz and maybe some others that I can't remember offhand.

Once the Saturn died and I sold mine, I got the PSone. From there it was the likes of GT2, World Touring Cars, Sled Storm and with the release of PS2 my addiction to racing games grew. PS2 racing games I have plenty of:

GT3 & GT4
Total Immersion Racing
Super Trucks
NFS Underground 1&2 & Most Wanted
F1 2003, 2004, 2005
Auto Modellista
Burnout 2&3(Takedown)&4(Revenge)
Midnight Club 2&3(DUB Edition)
Indycar Series
ToCA Race Driver 1&2
Le mans 24hrs
World Rally Championship
Wipeout Fusion

So yeah I love racing games

Started off with TOCA Touring car championship, the very original, from there it was GT1, just progressed with TOCA and GT with games like NFs on the way.

Yes I went as far back to the Atari, and I'm in my early 20s.

I'm not going to list them all.. but it started with Test Drive on the PC. Yes, the original 4-color version of the game.

Then there was a gap for a while... then eventually there was, as mentioned above, The Need for Speed. I think I picked up a Test Drive game for PS1 at some point, too.

And then there was Gran Turismo. And he looked upon his Playstation and said "It is good."

After that, it was all over... I've burned through so many racing games since then I can't even list them all. It's by FAR my "top genre" of games, the one genre I play more than all the others combined.

Right now.. let's see.. I have all the GT games, the original TOCA on PS1, Wipeout (forgot about Wipeout, I had that one before GT).. NFS3, NFS:HP2, NFS:MW, and two of the Ford Racing games (they were in a bundle for $10.. moment of weakness.. hehe).

First driving game - Need For Speed 2 SE
Then I got NFS4HS for Playstation.
I had Toca World Touring Cars and GT2 for PSX also. For PS2 I had the NFS UG series and I have NFS HP2 for PC as well. More recently, I got V8 Supercars 2 for PS2 and then I got GT4.

-Gran Turismo
-Colin McRae
-Need For Speed: High Stakes
-Need For Speed, the porsche one (for the PC and the PSX)
-Colin McRae 2
-Gran Turismo 2
-Midtown Madness
-Midtown Madness 2
-Sports Cars (not sure about the name)
-Gran Turismo 3
-Colin McRae 4
-WRC 3
-Enthusia
-Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
-Gran Turismo 4
Coming soon...
-Toca Race Driver 3

Maybe there are more, but I can't remember them

Nice lists everyone.
Brings back memmories:
Jedi2016
I'm not going to list them all.. but it started with Test Drive on the PC. Yes, the original 4-color version of the game.
How could I have forgotten that one. Played that game at a friend's house for ages.

Also, I would have to add one other major game to my list I forgot:

Colin McRae 04: I bought a Thrustmaster FF Wheel to play it, and I must have played it for a weekend straight, with only short sleeping interludes.;)

Wow. Memory lane! The big highlights are in bold, for those not interested in the waffle.

For me it started with Night Driver for the Atari. That must have been something like 1980 or maybe even earlier. There was a grand prix game for the Atari that my mate had too. I loved that but did not often get to play it.

Then came the Sinclair ZX Spectrum with a Psion game called Grand Prix or something like that. Three formula racing cars and about 10 tracks to choose from. No AI to worry about because you could only race against the clock...

Turbo Esprit was next on the Speccy. Naturally the choice of cars in that game was rather limited :sly: . That was all around 1985. Soon after that came Outrun in the coin ops, which I played and played until I'd spent a mint but finished it.

Next step was the PC and GP CGA (4 colours, 3 cars and 5 opponents if I remember.) and Test Drive 2 in EGA (15 colours?) Loved both and thought they were realistic at the time even though they did not model oversteer at all (and we complain about understeer in GT4!)

Hard Drivin' on coin op was available somewhere around 1989 and that was, to my mind, the daddy of properly accurate car driving sims. I haven't played anything since which offers an H-pattern gearshift and a proper clutch. Spent a mint on that one too.

The next big step was for me the greatest racing game yet. No game has given me more pleasure for my money before or since. That game is Miroprose's Grand Prix 2, on PC. I never could get enough of that game and would still play it now if the CD would load. Best AI I have ever encountered. Nothing has made me able to live the F1 driver dream as much as that masterpiece. It was utterly playable, always challenging, and could make finishing 5th feel like an achievement in a hard championship season. Strangely one of my best memories of that game was charging hard to catch Schumacher at Imola. I had 10 laps left, was about 10 seconds behind, and was catching him by almost but not quite a second a lap. Then I had a rear tyre blowout in the middle of Tamburello. The car spun onto the grass at 180mph, and instead of thinking "stupid game" I was thinking "this is gonna hurt if I hit anything" and "how does this affect my championship standing?" while standing on the brake pedal and waiting for my whole world to stop spinning on a 17in monitor. That was total immersion. That must have been maybe 8 years ago but I remember it as clearly as I remember my breakfast this morning.

Mixed up in all that are a few other notables. Grand Prix Legends was spectacular but it was a long time before I had a computer fast enough to do it justice. Grand Prix Legends gave me my first taste of the Nurburgring and I never did quite get on top of it. Even now, I can do a 4 hour race there in GT4 with reasonable competence, but I still have not yet completed a lap of the Nurb in GPL without crashing. Excellent engine sounds too.

Indianapolis 500 was much more fun than a game based on "go fast and turn left" has any right to be. Convincing physics, good quality competition and stupendously spectacular accidents.

Fatal Racing, for all its arcade qualities, hooked me with its career season mode. It was also quite satisfying to be able to nudge an unruly competitor off the edge of a cliff when the mood took me :sly:

I played GT2 at some point during all this but though I liked the range of cars available I dismissed it at that time as being too arcadey.

Funny then that my next big step came when my girlfriend decided she wanted a PS2, and I decided I may as well get the game with all the hype behind it, and bought Gran Turismo 3. Shortly after, I bought a wheel for it and that was hooked until the release of Gran Turismo 4, which has become probably the second most played driving game in my life after Grand Prix 2.

For a racing game, I reckon Grand Prix 2 is still my favourite. For a driving game, it's GT4. I also have Enthusia but even that has not managed to tempt me away from PD's offering.

Next on the list is GT Legends on the PC, which I just got recently and feels quite promising. Certainly the front wheel drive physics and feedback feel far more familiar than those in GT4...

EDIT: OOohh and how could I forget Carmageddon??? A bit of a detour but memorable all the same!

I've also gone though NFSU1 and 2, HP, HP2 and MW (all have been enjoyable for me), Driv3r (loved the soundtrack), Test Drive Overdrive, Juiced (hated it. Most unfinished PS2 game I've ever played), Geoff Crammond's GP3 and 4 (I always went back to GP2).

for me it all started with a little arcade game way back when it went by the name of Hard Drivin' from then on i was hooked on racing games played a bunch of games most memorable for me are all the GT series and Motor City Online

MY original racing game I played was Nascar racing 2 for PC way back when I was 6. Then I got a PS1 when I was 8 and my grand parents gave me Nascar 98'. After that I got nascar 99' , Ridge Racer 4, and destruction derby. It wasn't until I found an Underground demo disc with GT1 on I really started gettin into racing on PS games. I went out bought GT1 the next day and I was hooked. I have every GT game since that I could get my hands on ( GT1, GT2, GT3 ,GT4 ). Now my only game for PC is Nacsar Racing 4.

when i was younger i played racing games on the nintendo and Atari systems. pole position, rad racer, and their sequals. Next i moved onto various arcade games.

Bought The Need For Speed SE road and track for the pc. i think i had a pentium 2, 200mhz
Got a PS1, bought ridge racer,rage racer, GT1,(bought a crappy madcatz wheel), Cart World Series, Nascar 98, RRT4, GT2.

Got a PS2, bought GT3 and the original Driving Force Wheel, ridge racer,

Then i started playing PC sims, got drivers license and got a big wakeup call:)
Bought LFS S1 and a DFP. the game blew me away :), got gt4 and was dissapointed with the physics :(. BoughtRichard Burns Rally: the best rally sim by far.

LFS s2 comes out and pretty much kills off my gt4 gaming.

My wheel broke a few weeks ago so i havent been playing any racing games except NFS-MW.
I might buy GTR2 and NetKar Pro if they have stable netcode. I'm deffinatly buying GT5.

I've bought almost all of the NFS games. I'd say the worst one i played was Hot Pursuit 2 :P.

The D1 mod for Racer is pretty good. i reccomend it to anyone thats a fan of drifting since its free and pretty fun:tup:

theres about 30 more racing games i didnt mention but i'm too lazy too... wacky wheels, Formula 2000...

PC:Carmageddon I/II,nfsu,nfsu2,nfsmw,nfshp2,1nsane,driver,driver2,colin mcrae 2,midtown madness 2,test drive,juiced
