I searched "scariest horror game" on GTPlanet and nothing came up, so I assume nothing has been made about this yet.

What is your personal scariest horror game? The game that gave you nightmares, made you scream, or just plain creeped you out?

As a longtime horror game player, these are my scariest in three categories...you can follow these if you wish.

Scariest Older Game (pre-2000): System Shock 2/Alone in the Dark/Clock Tower

Scariest Modern Game (2000-present): Amnesia: The Dark Descent/Slender

Creepiest moment in a non-horror game: Max's nightmare in the original Max Payne.

Doom 3
The audio was especially amazing in surround sound. That game was audio perfection.
Which to my surprise is getting ported to the 360 with Doom 1 and Doom 2 and all the expansions. :)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent with Slender a close second. If the game develops right, however, it could surpass Amnesia.

That being said, I don't have a lot of baseline for horror games. I'm kind of a wuss when I'm in control.

I haven't the guts to play them myself.

The scariest let's plays though:
The first Clock Tower, Dead Space 1, Amnesia, Slender and SCP Containment Breach have some shocks here and there even for those watching.

Some of the monster animations from Sweet Home are amazingly terrifying. I'd imagine playing the first Alone in the Dark without any help is a lesson in fear too.

I just played DAY Z for arma 2 last night for the first time. It was the only time I was actually scared playing a game. I spawned in the pitch black dark with only the moonlight to go by. I had no weapons light or anything. I walked slowly for about a half hour before I noticed anything and then seen a town on the horizon. I snuck down to it and was surrounded by zombies before I knew it. Trying to crawl away from them was the only time I have ever actually felt scared playing a game in my life. Easily the scariest game ever.

Agreed. Fatal Frame 2 and the original Resident Evil are also high on my list.

I never bought Sweet Home because:
1. Couldn't find an English translated version.
2. Thought it would be too cheesy.

Also, playing Alone in the Dark w/o help isn't a lesson in horror...it's a semester lol.

Haven't played DAY Z in nighttime yet....that does sound like an experience!

I've not played scary games, but I do have to say after picking up the original FEAR game on a sale and playing some levels in that, that was (to me, who is newly introduced to it) a real masterclass at how they managed your fear and dread during the gameplay.

Until you worked out the mechanics of it and it didn't quite have the same impact.

But dear god, some of those scenes were a bit jarring and really did give me the heebie-jeebies.

I've got Amnesia as well, not started it yet. Well, you got to play it with headphones and a dark room for the best effect. Oh.

Dead Space came from System Shock, so you might want to find System Shock to get the original feel of where Dead Space came from

Since I loved System Shock (and still do), I was very dissapointed with Dead Space...for a game inspired by it, it, to me didn't replicate the atmosphere and lonliness very well.

Surprised it wasn't mentioned: Silent hill on ps. Silent hill 2 comes very close. That game was very unsettling.

I also would like to mention the first Resident Evil. I played it for the first time when I just got my psone, I was 15 years old. I didn't want to play it because I was so scared, but I couldn't stop

I don't have many horror games, so it's probably one of the resident evil games (not 5)

I have just finished playing "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream" on the PC.

I have never encountered a game that was so emotional...the amount of emotion in that game was so powerful, I cried at a certain part.

You think you feel lonely while playing Dead Space? Play this. My brain is fried.
