Yesterday afternoon I was changing some icons via the File Associations screen and made a mess of things. Whatever I did has caused Windows to completely forget how to open each folder in the same window. At the very beginning, everything wanted to open in a Command (DOS) window, so things are better than when I first screwed it up, but not perfect. Basically, I'm no registry expert and have no idea how to restore the entry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Classes/Directory is what I think I messed up, but I'm not certain.)

Any registry experts out there? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Meant to post this to Computers main. Please move?

Open windows explorer, tools, Folder Options, General - There is a selection to "open each folder in the same window" or "open each folder in its own window". You can figure it out from there.

Yeah, I'm aware of that option, but what I've done has made Windows ignore that preference altogether. It's all down to the registry, I just don't know what to fix.

This should fix your problem. And you shouldn't change your icons through the file associations menu, makes your computer go screwy, use a program like IconTweaker.

Lesson learned. :(

I've made the same mistake, took ages on google to find a solution.

You, sir, are the man. I missed the fact that there was a link in your first post -- my bad.

Anyhow, issue resolved. :)
