I've not had a racing wheel before, but I'm seriously considering one. What does gtplanet recommend?

I don't want to buy the cheapest one and be disappointed, but then I don't wnat to buy a really expensiveone and discover I prefer playing with DS3! So anything from Logitech DFGT to Trustmaster 500 is possible.

So what is your recommendation and what is the pros and cons with your choice?

I went with a DFGT when GT5 came out. It was inexpensive and has worked well for me this whole time.
I'm sure the other more expensive ones are better or more immersive, but I'm a cheapskate and wasn't going to spend 200+ on a gaming controller.

Also whatever you decide to go with make sure your rig is solid as it makes a ton of difference. In the old forums there was a DIY or "poormans guide" to building one out of PVC and filling the tubes with sand for support. I built mine for less than $50 in about an hour (minus the paint drying) and it actually looks good, and is very functional.

Just my .02

Basically you get what you pay for. DFGT is not going to be able to compete with Thrustmaster or Fanatec wheels. You just have to find the balance. For me, the balance is G27 (can't justify the price of Thrustmaster or up), but honestly, there's nothing wrong with DFGT. A huge leap forward from DS3.

To me hands down the G27 is the best wheel for the money. However be advise that Logitech has discontinue them.
I have been using these wheel for the last 18months and totally love it; there are many accessories to upgrade it and make the racing even better.

Are you sure. I thought they just recently released a new version.

I am also using the G27 as it is the best value. Really great quality wheel with clutch pedal at a reasonable price.

G25/G27 was probably best balance between quality and price. My G25 has served me since 2009 and I decided to retire it finally last week and bought T500RS. It is a nicer wheel, but there are some area I feel G25 is still nice. The leather wrapping for one, and the simple clamp design is still better(and more space efficient) than the V-clamp thing on the T500RS. The DFGT will serve as a good start into using wheels though.

I purchased a new G27 a few weeks ago for $200 and only had it for a few days before I returned it. I don't know if mine was faulty or not but it just didn't feel right. The force feedback did not feel realistic at all. Very wobbly, and clunky. Hard to explain but I was disappointed as a first time wheel user. I have a T500 on the way which supposedly has a much more realistic feel.

Ive been using a fanatec porshe carrera wheel and i really dis liked the gear drive and the cheap peddals with it so i just upgraded to a fanatec csr forza wheel with elite csr peddals i found on ebay for 300$ free shipping.Ive never used a g27 but they have them on ebay for 250$ with peddals all day long.

I must be doing something wrong then cause I routinely beat guys with Thrust master and Fanatech wheels.

I don't think different wheel will necessarily be faster or slower.....I feel like at the moment I might still be faster on G25 than I am with the T500...When he meant compete I think he meant in terms of feel and the quality of FFB. G25 is a lot coarser and you can feel the gear tooth through the rim. The force level I feel is comparable to the T500RS, but the feedback quality is better on the Thrustmaster. I had a Driving Force Pro before I have the G25 and that is another level down from the G25. I am sure a fast guy on which ever wheel can be fast....you are paying more for different level of experience in terms of FFB quality and build quality.

I take that back... It is back on their page, i am actually glad they are still making it.

Thanks everyone, I guess there are many different opinions here. But as someone said the rig is probably quite important. I was actually just going to put it on a small table, and that may mean that buying the most expensive one is a waste.

I'll do a bit of bargain hunting during and after christmas and see...

Yup, I meant in terms of the quality. Obviously the quality of the wheel doesn't necessarily mean quality of its users. I'm sure there are lots of guys on DS3 that could beat my ass, but that wasn't the point.

I searched for months or so to upgrade from a DFGT to a G27 finally found a new one on CL for $200 the difference was night and day for me. Some old guy bought it and didn't use it for whatever reason. Got home and realized the pedals would slip on the carpet, "My carpet sucks!" so I built a full rig for $50 parts from lowes and a Seat from our local junk yard $20,Flipped the pedals and mounted them and made a shifter mount, still not done with what I want to do with it. Want to get a Buttkicker but a little wary on that one yet. Just search and you can find one you like, I wouldn't go lower than a g27 if you can. Wish I would have done that before I bought my DfGT wheel.

I have since 2000. They are very afordable and work great with all the wheels. I have used every wheel on the market with it and best of all it folds up with wheel and peddles on it to store away in a closet. Very Practicle and very sturdy. Check it out. www.WheelstationPro.com
