I have a GT5 driving force wheel and a home made seat but i find i am faster with my DS3 is anyone else faster with a pad than their wheel?

No, there were a load of licence tests I couldn't get gold on with the ds3, but once I got the dfgt I finally got there!. It does take a while to master the wheel though. I'd just say stick at it! It's more fun and realistic anyway!

It is totally possible to be faster on a controller that a wheel, it depends what suits you as both have advantages and disadvantages. I read on here that PD improved the DS3 effectiveness somehow in an update too but cant remember where.

It's taken me ten days but I'm definitely faster on the DFGT. BUT on a track like Cote d' Azur or Madrid I find the controller gets me around the tighter corners faster and gets me out of the wall much, much, much, much faster than the wheel. So I'm staying in practice with the DS3 for those tricky tracks.

As long as you have a decent wheel and a stable mount/setup, with practice you will likely be faster with the wheel over the DS3. This is not true for everyone because racing wheels are just not for everyone. I am faster with the DS3 only because I've been using it for years and my friend's wheel setups feel so awkward and unfamiliar, and I'm not used to the response (lack thereof) with the pedals and wheel.

A G27 knocked three seconds off my lap at SSR5 with a basically identical car. That's with a ghetto wheelstand setup involving a TV tray and a lawn chair. So yes, I'd say a wheel is faster.

Sorry for being ignorant but... what's a DS3? I tried searching for ds3 and ds3 racing and pad and all, but I didn't find anything reminding me of something for racing. Could anyone show a picture?

At first you're bound to be faster with pad, wheel takes some time to get aquainted to.

DS3 = DualShock3...it's the standard controller that comes with the PS3 (= PlayStation3 :sly:)

Ah! Ok. Well, if its a controller, i'm faster with the wheel. 7' 12 at the Ring in a Takata Dome NSX '06, 7' 03 with wheel.

The wheel will be faster, it just takes time to change from a controller to a wheel. :) Practise practise practise.

you need to practice left foot braking .impossible to be as fast as pad with one foot

Not true. I drive one-footed... feels more natural and if I ever try to use the cluth + H-shifter it'll be valuable.

Once again, not true. I started beating my pad times almost immediately once I stopped fighting the half-sized shifter and used the paddles.

I don't have a definite answer yet, because I've only been racing with a T500RS for a couple of days, but I anticipate being quite a bit faster when I finally get the hang of it. I'm close to my DS3 times already and I've got WAAAAAAY more refining to go

I find it odd that a wheel user is allowed to have an advantage over a DS3 user in online racing in GT5. However, one cannot use a mouse/keyboard to have an advantage over a DS3 user in FPS (First Person Shooters) online. I wonder why?

The DFGT gives feedback. It's different to the DS3 in feel and there are pluses and minuses to both for feel.

I cant say for sure how much game time I've had with the DFGT but I'm definately still a little slower with the wheel, 'course I've always used controller all the way through from GT1 to GT4 and start of GT5. More consistent with the wheel though. I've had the wheel for about 4 months now but I only play a few(maybe 6 or 7)hrs. a week, on a good week. The thing is, it's hard to do "crazy-go for broke" laps with the wheel 'cause I'm always afraid of spinning out. It's much easier to catch slides with the controller for me. With wheel I always seem to end up spinning or overcorrecting and spinning in the opposite direction. I think It's even made worse for me 'cause of my driving style with the controller. I used to do a lot of trail-braking going into corners and with the fact that this is harder to catch with the wheel I need to totally change my driving style but it's imprinted into my brain and it's hard to get out. Trail-braking is using the brakes to help turn the car. I could brake later, get it turned and then power out straighter. Now, with the wheel, I have to brake sooner, in a straight line, so I have to re-learn all the braking points and then drive the corner smoother with the throttle and steering and my lines are totally different. The style with the controller was more of a fast in, point and shoot affair. Mind you, I knew this was not the fastest way around the track but I was pretty competitive doing it even though most of the faster guys out there with wheels could easily beat me and I always new why they were faster and the wheel just multiply's that fault in driving style.

Best example I can think of is I used to compete in a league with the RUF RGT (Porshe rear engine) which a lot of people hated driving 'cause of the rear weight bias, but it was perfect for my style with the controller and my favorite car for quite some time at around 550pp. Killer under braking and the weight over the rear allowed me to brake late and put the power down early. Now with the wheel, I absolutely hate driving it. I'm all over the place trying to catch the rear end.

Also have too re-tune for the wheel as with my set-ups for the controller I seem to get a lot more understeer. Especially brake bias and diff settings.

Point is, the wheel is a lot more realistic and has pointed out serious faults in my old driving style. It's almost like a whole new game for me. I even went back and did most of the lisence test over and some of the easier A-spec Races.

Sorry for the long post, I tend to get long winded with my explanations.

Who drives with one foot anyway?

Erm... What?

Right foot braking can be just as fast in road and GT style cars. It's only in F1 style cars that left foot braking saves you noticeable amounts of time.

I run against left foot brakers (and quick ones at that) and have beaten them on multiple occasions.
