wheel vs joystick controller

Hey guys,
Got a question, lets see if I can word this right.
When using a steering wheel instead of the stick controller, does the wheel turn the wheels of the car directly and evenly? What I mean is, when using the stick pushing it like all the way to the left or right doesnt always turn the wheels all the way. The game judges your speed and so forth and only lets you turn as sharp as it allows (even with all driving aids off). In a real car you can turn as little or as sharp as you want no matter how fast your going and the amount you turn the steering wheel always means the same.
If a game driving wheel acts like a real one, it sure would make things easier as you could get a feel for how far to turn.
Hope that makes sense,
Thanks!

Welcome to :gtpflag:

Basically, yes you can turn the car's front wheels as much as you want when using a steering wheel. Just do expect a lot of tyre smoke and wear, though I'm not sure whether it is completely realistic.

Both in real life and in GT5 (on a wheel) if driving properly you will never turn the wheel more than 90 degrees

unless youre going very slow or doing some ungodly turn, like the hairpin at monaco

turning the wheel more than that is just going to cause 'pushing' , what zed said, you will just burn up your front tires and wont turn anymore

Thanks!
That sounds much better, Im sick of pushing the stick all the way to one extreme and the car stjll not turning sharp enough.
True that makes sense, but if turning the wheel say 30 degrees always angles the wheels on the car the same amount (regardless of speed, like a real car) you could at least feel more in control?

With the stick the game applies smoothing to your input otherwise it would be impossible to drive with so little movement lock to lock and the fact you can go from full lock to lock in an instant. That's why the game (and basically every racing game around) applies smoothing to your inputs. It's not really an aid, it's just neccesary given that you're controlling a car with the small stick.

Good point, I see how its required... it still annoys me though. :-)
But if the wheel doesnt do that, then Im really wanting one now. Any bad ones to avoid?

Well definetely avoid the cheap crappy ones that you can get at Toys-R-Us/Walmart/whatever. The cheapest wheel that will have force feedback (that's the feeling of the road and will allow "pushing" and direct control of the front wheels) is the Logitech Driving Force Pro. It's going to be hard to find it though, since it's discontinued but buy the newer version Driving Force GT.

But if you do have a little more money to burn then get a G25/G27 (G25 is also discontinued, so going to have to buy it used). And if you own a bank then go for the Thrustmaster T500 👍 .

Yes the cheapest wheel you should consider new is the Driving Force GT. I don't know where you are but on the UK Logitech site they regularly have 'blemished box' items and the DFGT sometimes shows up at £69, I got one a earlier this year and the box was actually perfect condition, as were the contents of course.

Keep an eye on there. Otherwise it's £100+

Depends OP what kind of wheel you want, DFGT makes quite a lot of noise compared to G27 and pedal quality is quite a bit better on G27 as well as clutch and H-shifter. Minimum wheel you should be looking at is the DFGT though.

You can get it for £75 at Argos but I guess it is only useful to OP if he lives close by / is in this country and is in stock in local area: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9004179.htm

I got my DFGT over 2 years ago for £69.99 from Amazon and few months before I bought mine I saw it being sold new for £49.99. £100+ is too much to pay for it now, better off getting G27 for a bit more then. I got my G27 for £150.

Check Ebay for Logitech driving force gt. i've seen them from $35- $80 buy it now, some with free shipping. I have had a driving force pro for over 7-8 years( right when gt4 came out), and it has been good to me. Only gripe is the pedal feel...very light pedals, but there are plenty of how to ideas for making them firmer on this site or google. Good luck, and you will surely never go back to a controller once comfortable with a wheel.

Even the DFGT pedals feel mushy but I would imagine they would feel slightly firmer than DFP. But here's a tip, find something like a sponge and stuff it under the brake pedal to increase the feel in the pedal, stuff more of it in to have a firmer feel, or stuff less of it for a less firmer feel.

Think it's realistic.

👍
Having a wheel changed the whole experience

A very nice, not expensive, set is the Fanatec Carrera set, it has everything you need and can be found for a reasonnable amount. Not buying a set with a clutch and gate shifter is a mistake, as it so much fun and very immersive.

In some cases turning the wheel more than your so-called 90 degree is needed.
The thumb relief was designed into racing wheels so the driver could turn the wheel 180 degrees without removing his hands from the wheel.
