Hey peoples. After seeing all the x1 posts this site gets, one thing has stood out to me. WHEEL IS THE ONLY WAY!!!!!! So I was wondering. If this is the only GT game I own, and considering the new system that Sony is probably working on right now (This ones getting close to it's kill time), is a wheel a good investment? Either for realism purposes or for other games?
 
Don't get your hopes up for a new console any time soon.. trust me, to fully enjoy Gran Turismo, you need a decent wheel, after all it's called the "Real Driving" simulator.. and we don't drive real cars with PS3 controllers:p
 
Definitely worth it. Some examples at various price points:

$130: Logitech DFGT
$350: Fanatec GT3 RS with ClubSport Pedals
$600: Thrustmaster T500RS
 
I wouldn't have logged anywhere near the hours I have into GT if I didn't have a wheel. It adds an entire new dimension to the game.
 
Can I choose between flappy paddle or matrixamajigger transmissions

P.S.S. Gearboxes are for British Hammsters (Top Gear reference, Just so u know i meant to spell hamster that way, don't complain)
 
Definetely, the game will turn into a totally new experience if you ask me.

You can go for a DFGT as a starter device, the force feedback is quite impressive when you're coming from a standard controller, the pedals are very plasticky but the overall package is a bargain considering how the wheel feels. I recommend. 👍

I found a refub Logitech Wireless for $30 online. Had it now a week. No pedals, but the experience is awesome compared to DS3.
 
Definitely... I drive with a DS3 and there are times I need/want a wheel.

Plus it means my parents and my sister might take an interest in GT5 since all 3 of our cars are in the game.
 
Oh yes a wheel is worth it, I have a DFGT, just remember if you do get a wheel, there is going be to a learning curve with it. I have only had mine for about two months now, and still learning on it. But it really does change the game.
 
Totally worth it! I was already satisfied with GT4 + DFGT (Logitech driving force GT), so it can only get better with GT5.

The DFGT is compatible with GT5 but i didn't try it yet since i only have the game since a week. Can somebody share his impressions about using it with GT5?
 
There are 3 main points that put me off a wheel.

1. The expense
2. The setup
3. It's just a game

I'd imagine none of these things bother you, or you wouldn't be asking in the first place, but I can tell from the comments and the times on the leaderboards that if you want to be fast, it's probably the only way to go. If I had the spare cash and my PS3 set up away from the main living area, I'd probably have one by now.
 
I have a DFGT and I could never go back to a controller. I really love the DFGT too, IMO its the best wheel for the money, although I don't know what its like compared to one of those high-end wheels.
 
You CAN do a bronze with DS3 (I did, was as hard as hell though), but you would be better off with a wheel. Get |DFGT to start with, and if you want to upgrade, get Fanatec GT3/G27/ThrustMaster T500RS

Yes, a wheel is worth it if you really like this game.

You do have to consider a few things before dropping that much cash.

First, the cost of a wheel. They are not cheap.

Secondly, placement of wheel. Many don't consider how they will set up a wheel until they get one. It needs to be mounted to something solid. Do you have the required space for it? Will it get in the way of people in the house? Look at your situation and ask yourself these questions.

Third, your comfort is important. You want to be able to spend hours not minutes behind the wheel. Get a chair that you'll be able to spend lots of time in.

I have been through 4 wheels in my GT life. I loved each one of them. Finally after years of working on my set up, it is done. I have a corner of the living room dedicated to me and my racing.

I have the Logitech G27 wheel and the kick ass Obutto cockpit. I can and do spend hours in it at a time.

Do not buy one thinking that inmediately you are going to gold the Red Bull Challenge. Obviously it is easier with a wheel, but there are people who is faster with gamepad... Anyway a steering wheel is definitely the way to go.
 
i bought a g27 couple of days ago and i recommend a wheel , it takes a while to get used to driving with the wheel(i am still having trouble controlling the car at high speeds braking with abs off etc.) but you should definitely get one, i recommend the g27 , u can't use some of the buttons on it and u can't change the button config , but it's a good wheel anyway. Driving with h shifter is fun and challenging, i don't even look at my gamepads anymore i only use em to turn ps3 on. I am glad i bought it , also mounting it on a solid stand is important , i mounted it on a foldable table i found at home , and i use an office chair with it, luckily this setup worked for me , it's comfortable and compact , but like vermontster says u should think before getting one .
 
About a year and a half ago, in preparation for GT5, I went out and got one of these:

At the time, they were only $40 dollars. Before this, I only used a Dual Shock.

I have to say, I was amazed at how much difference a wheel makes, even a crappy $40 dollar one like this.

When I say "difference," I'm not only talking about better lap times, although I'm sure it helps there too, I'm talking about how much more immersed you become in the game.

I just wish I had a bit better setup. I don't have a lot of room for a full cockpit, so I just screwed it onto an old TV tray, and weighted it all down with a couple of barbells. It works okay, but I can't really sit behind it for more than an hour without my knees killing me, especially if there is any fine throttle work needed. Trying to "hover" my foot in place for an extended period of time is torture.
 
I'd definately go for a wheel, I got my 1st one (Logitech Driving Force Pro) for GT4 on the PS2, it had a usb connection so it was compatible with the PS3. When GT5 came out I upgraded to a Logitech G25, the steering felt very similar to the DFP, but the paddle shifters & peddals were better. I believe the DFGT is a great wheel for the price.
I could never go back to a controller after the wheel, it's just so much more fun, forget about lap times

As I've said since GT5 came out several months ago: Playing GT5 on a regular controller is only half-way playing GT5. If you want to play the game properly to get the full GT5 experience, the only way to do that is on a wheel.
