I've been slightly confused recently regarding what cars need an engine break-in and when. So if anyone could clarify this:

Premium car from NCD - Break in necessary
New Standard car (eg. prize) - Break in necessary
Standard car from UCD - Break in not necessary if mileage is more than 200 miles
Standard car from OCD - Presumably break-in necessary?
Car with engine overhaul carried out - ???

Thanks. :)

Cars from the OCD are pre broken-in. No oil change/overhaul necessary. The rest of your post is correct though.

That would explain a lot actually, thanks.
And engin overhauls...?

no need for break-ins after engine overhauls, I guess.

All depends on the mileage, I know a guy who does overhauls every 50 mile so he will do apr 4 overhauls before the engine is broken in.

So essentially engine overhauls aren't related to break-ins, just a way of restoring power?

Exactly. Over time the engine wares down. You'll notice this when you make an oil change that doesn't keep the engine power up for very many miles. This is when it is time for an overhaul.

Cars from the UCD and OCD never need broken in. An oil change will put them at maximum power regardless of how few miles they have. For cars from the UCD with a few thousand miles on them an engine overhaul may be required to bring them up to their max potential power. Note that after about 15,000miles all cars start to suffer from permanent power loss and even an engine overhaul won't restore them to their full power.

Also, car that have been restored using the special restoration tickets needs running in.

The last time you told me that Despy, I somehow interpreted that as all standard cars do not need breaking in, which is untrue.

Not all cars from the UCD are broken in, there have been several zero mileage cars in the UCD and they do need breaking in. And even dozens more with very little mileage.

But over a long period of time, there will be permanent BHP loss that you can't get back no matter what you do. That is when you know it's time to buy a new car  .

I have an FGT that I bought from the OCD with zero miles on it, it currently has over 2,500 miles on it. And its HP rating has gone from 936 to 935, so while engine rebuilds do restore power, they're not really necessary unless you're that worried about max power.

Actually no pretty much all the standard cars require no break in regardless of mileage. Feel free to double check me and get back with posts or PMs if you find some in the UCD or OCD that require a break in, but with over 2,000 cars in my two accounts most of them low mileage or 0/0 cars I've found that a simple oil change on the standards brings them to full power unlike the premiums from the NCD which require a break in.
There may be some standards that do require a break in but I've not found any and several other members of the Tuning forum have found the same thing I have.

Despy, my Impreza in the SuperGT Shootout needed break in, and so did my Lupo GTI in the STC. I'm guessing that's because both of those were new prize cars I received though, and not bought from the UCD.

My second Bugati Veyron bought from the UCD needed breaking in. Cannot check at the moment but sure it came 957 bhp. Will check next time I load the game.

Yep i know this and another major thing for why i love this game is that it does calculate over time the original power will never come back... I have a red bull x2010 (so far that's the only car that has been affected buy this) the red bull has over 600k recorded miles and it says it doesn't need a oil change or engine overhaul but it has lost over 150HP... On that profile all i did was grind...
