When should one start trying to learn?

Hi. As you can probably tell from the name, I'm new at the whole drifting scene. I would like to learn how to drift on Gran Turismo 3, but I'm not sure that I'm advanced enough in regular grip driving to move on to drifting. My question is "Should one master the art of grip driving before trying to learn to drift?" The word master is used loosely here, but just to give you a clue about my newbieness (if that was a word), I can't get all golds on the regular B license yet. I'm close, but still not at that level.

Thanks for any and all help!

The answer is no. Well at least in my opinion because i started drifting right off the bat ignoring grip driving in GT3. I could careless about the licenses but just takin a few helps though. FYI i ain't got no license haha.

I'd start with a drift guide that tells you what kind of drifts there are and than heading to Drift Settings Depot for your choice of cars.

In my opinion, it's pretty important to pick up a good knowledge of 'normal' racing before you start to drift, as this gives you some experience to fall back on. Of course, the reason I suggest this is because I picked up racing games immediately after my young, vulnerable mind was subjected to Initial D!, so of course I was in full fanboy mode and only took corners via drifting. Which sort of rubs off on me now, when I'm trying to better my actual lap times.

In my opinion, its pretty nice to learn how to grip before drifting. I find it handy...Dunno why, it just helps with car control when you start drifting..

Personally, I would recommend that you learn grip driving first, then when you have a basic understanding of racing lines, throttle and brake control, etc, go ahead an try drifting.

yeah. what Ethix said.

but then again, why ask this when you can go and try for yourself?? just do it, its only a game for Christ's sake its not like you're gonna kill yourself.

Personally I don't think you can really learn much from grip driving in this game. Most of the grip driving experience revolves around being able to feel the car, and in GT3 you can't. Most of the drifting experience revolves around prediction, so as far as GT3 goes, there's very little that applies to both grip and drifting. Master grip driving, and you will learn some basic car control and program some basic reflexes, but I think the time would be better spent just starting with drifting honestly. Real life is a different story of course.

I too would suggest learning to drive well in general before you try to really try becoming fast or drifting...

you do not need to master anything at all... Rather you must feel comfortable enough to drive without asm at least and tcs below a value of five to become a mster of anything in gt3... you need to learn how to take lines... what happens when you push your car too fast.. and how you can controll your car with throttle brake and steering...

I understand what you are saying NISMOFO... but it will be easier to leanr and you will be a better gt3 driver in general if you understand the basics before you attempt anything too drastic... If you really want control over your cars in gt3 you will learn how to race well as well as control the car while sideways... Throttle control. proper braking techniques... and steering will be taught in this manner and the driver will mature in a healthy way where nothing will be lost to taking shortcuts..

Welcome to GTP!!!! Enjoi ur stay.
If I were u, I'd try a Silvia, RX-7 Infini, or a Trueno first. They handle well for a beginner.

I would like to thank everyone for taking time to give me their input on this subject. I am not, by any means, making an attempt to close off this subject if someone feels that they could share something which would be profitable.

Your time and effort in assisting me with this is very much appreciated.
