Where can I find info on online racing?

I'm kinda new on online racing and I have A LOT of questions such as how to find the room I'm looking for, what's the difference between a normal and a friendly race, etc...you know, the knowledge I'd need to navigate and enjoy the most of online racing. I was wondering, instead of enumerating every single questions here, maybe someone could link me to an existent thread or guide which would lighten me. Because for now I only enter rooms that shows the pp limit when I put my cursor on, but what about all the others, how come they don't have information? Do we really have to enter it then ask the host what's all about? Kinda time consuming, no? Please any info would be very helpful to the online noob that I am, thanks.
 
I'm not really sure if theres a thread I'm sure there must be but heres some answers until someone posts the thread.

Personally I would create your own room online and just mess about with all the settings, try and figure out what everything does.

If there is no Info on a room while seaching that means the host has not set any regulations ie no pp/bhp/weight/tire limits. So you could drive any car

Normally the host will have something in the title which describes what is going on in the room.

Real race/fun race/free run is just something the host picks when opening the room to again help describe what is going on in the room.

Be warned there are alot of idiots online, that may not follow the rules of the host or anyone else for that matter. But please don't let them ruin your experience as racing online with friends can be great fun and one of the best parts of GT5.
 
1. The difference between race for fun and race for real is really nothing. The more serious hosts tend to tag their rooms as "race for real" while the more casual hosts often use "race for fun." In theory, when you join a race for real room there will be more serious racers, and when you join a race for fun room its usually just people wanting to race and have some fun with out getting too serious. And no, the tag doesn't effect how the race or room works (such as physics and all that stuff). It simply just shows how the room will be run by the host and what kind of people will be in that room.

2. The rooms that don't show PP limits likely don't have limits and you can use a car at what ever performance you like. The majority of non regulated rooms are just free run rooms. The bad part about this is that it doesn't show what other regulations the host has on such as driving aid restrictions. If you want to know more details about a room without joining, just message the host over PSN and hope he replies.

Racing online is awesome. Just find the class of car you wish to run, and join a similiar room. I tend to stay away from the obvious rooms titled "dirty" "noob" etc. You can always tell how mature the host is through the title name. Some of the closest races I've had have been shuffles.
 
Well thank you guys for those fast replies. And what about shuffle racing? I've seen somewhere that they're race with fixed cars, means same car for everyone? How can I search/find those rooms? And that thing on the rooms saying "fix owner yes/no", might not be exactly the words though(mine's in french). Got a lot of questions, sorry about that.:) I wish there were some events where serious(not TOO serious tho) players regularly gather for some clean/fun racing which would be open for newcomers because I don't have any friends who play GT5.
 
Shuffle races are when the game picks a random car for everyone from a selection of say 40 cars. Fixed room host means if the host leaves, the room will shut.

Is there a way to search for these particular rooms? Or is it just random.
 
This maybe isn't a good answer, but there are also rooms for cruising and drag racing. You usually find cruising servers by its name, like "free run", "UK road laws + cops" and in drag racing, you just go to a straight's head and try to race someone. I support you to buy the Nissan Skyline '01 Pace Car from the Online Dealership. It's a car shop, which Gran Turismo "team" refreshes. The Pace Car is the most regular "cop" car, because it has working blue lights on it. I use my time for cruising almost every time. :)
 
Thanks for all these replies and links, misters. I'll dig it up and try a little more to play online. Is it just me or the rooms we can select are lacking info badly? I'd like to know a lot more before actually enter the room since the loading time is non-negligable.
 
yeah I know what you mean about the lack of info, shuffle races are probably your best bet just now. They are easy you just jump in you get given a car and you race simples, no need to seach for a car and tune it ect.

Correct you are. But its always best to focus on the positives of GT5. Its so easy to get wrapped up in all the negatives you find in GT5 because it is such a big game. The truth is there are many many more things that are "right" in GT5 than things that are wrong. After being in the forums for a while, you'll see many users who's main focus is to pick apart GT5 and embellish every little bug and problem they find. Just make sure you never become one of these people.
 
If you have any online problems in a server, ask host. (S)he will help you, like yesterday in a cruising he saw that I was a reliable player, and he gave me the rights to change the speed limit and other things.

Car tuning is a important thing, online and offline. Nicer to drive with a good car, isn't it? Here, in GT5 Tuning Forum, you can find tuning infos. There are many ready tunes, just make a car similar to them. If not, just (take the nearest tune and) go look yourself for a good tune.

Please, don't be angry there, if some players are stupid, go away. The host can kick or mute (all, what you talk in text chat, are these stars ***) you. Also, it's quicker to chat with a USB-keyboard, and of course, headphones.

I see your point, you'll find negative people on every forum, on any subject. It's way easier to complaint than to bring constructive efforts. Don't worry about me, I'm so addictive to this game I can barely put down the controller to eat and sleep as I'm on vacation right now, I love that game and am fully aware of its hugeness and am not asking for perfection or miracles.

I remember when I got that addicted to GT5. Now I'm just looking for something else to get me addicted again, because playing online isn't doing it for me anymore (probably because I suck). I think I have found it in rally cars. They are really fun once you learn how to corner with them in the dirt.
