Where do I search for a friend's online ID?

Hello.
I have just hooked my PS3 up to the internet for the first time. I would like to find my one and only friend who is also online, but I can't find where to do a search for his online ID, and add him to my empty list.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the only way to find out is to ask him. BTW, what did you imagine you would search by anyways? Birthdate, name, social security?
 
Well, actually, I know what his online ID is, and I just wanted to know where to type it in and connect with him. I figured it out, you have to go out of the game to do a friend request. So thankfully, your sarcastic, completely unhelpful response is not really required.
Good thing eh?
