Where do the cars come from?

I see a lot of gripes about not enough beemers or no Porches, etc. I am certain that Sony has to have the manufacturer's permission to use their cars, trademarks, etc.

My question is, does Sony pay royalties to the car manufacturers,  do the car manufacturers pay Sony for promoting their car, or is it just a push where Sony says, we'll get your car in front of our users if you let us use it in the game.?

Anyone know how this works?
