OK, I'm looking to get into PC racing.
I've read everything online, but there's so much stuff out there, conflicting information, and some games I can't even figure out how to buy.

So here are some of my parameters...

It needs to work well with a G25. Doesn't have to be fully supported, but I'd like the FF to work.
I need either mods or the game needs to come with the following tracks/cars...
-Porsche 917
-Porsche 956
-Porsche RS Spyder
-Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (Flying Lizard)
-Sebring
-Le Mans
-Lime Rock

Id like the physics to be at least adequate. The above requirements need to work first.

I'd prefer a one time payment as opposed to a monthly fee or whatever.

I'd also like a demo to try it out. But if it meets the approval of all you guys and has all the above requirements, I'm good.

Thanks guys!

Ummm, I have absolutely no idea.
How can I look that up?
It's not like dinosaur old, it's relatively new as a matter of fact.
My parents just got a Mac, so if I slow down the PC too much they won't really care.

OK, I'm leaning towards rFactor now.
How are the physics, how does it support the G25/G27? And the DFGT.
And can you install mods on iRacing?

rfactor is good.
G2x works, but need some playing with the settings.

Have you looked for GTR 2 or evo?
Lots of mods.
Look here it's german, but no need to register

Have all three installed.

You can also look for the m3 challenge. GTR light (1 car, 1 circuit) , but free

Rfactor is fantastic, though it takes some setting up to get the steering/ffb feeling right, and you will have to download mods for the Porsche (thankfully there are high quality versions of these very popular cars)

GTR2 is also quite good (i find it harder/less natural to play) and has Porsche cars with the standard game.

You have those in both rfactor and GTR2, i think the newest one are those from rfactor, you find the ffb more GT5 "ish" in GTR2 and in rfactor more "tougher".

Here you have:

-Porsche 917
http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=28399

-Porsche 956
Sport Prototypes League Edition v2.2 find it in google

-Porsche RS Spyder
http://rfactoresources.blogspot.com/2009/10/rfactor-endurance-series-v12-mod-nuevo.html

-Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (Flying Lizard)
http://www.virtualr.net/vln-mod-2007-released/

And the tracks are in the several sites.

In f1 classic forums you can find the best mods and tracks. Also there you can find the GTR2 counterparts.

👍

What are the physics/graphics like for rFactor and GTR Evo and GTR 2?

Rfactor physics are better than GT5's for racing, GTR2 runs the same physics engine as Rfactor. Though they feel slightly different it is very similar. Graphics are obviously not fantastic as it is an older game, some of the car models can be amazing, but most of them are not. The graphics are more than good enough to be enjoyed though.

What are the physics/graphics like for rFactor and GTR Evo and GTR 2?

From the physics side, i can talk about rfactor/GTR2, they are "in the same league" rfactor have a 400 mhz physics engine, i donk know the rates of GTR2, but they quite similar, some claim that rfactor have better physics and more sense of speed and i agree, its something like pepsi or coke, you must try and find that one suited for you.
For graphics rfactor has slightly better graphics. But remember both have dated graphics (2005) you must tweek them, try with enbseries.

The special thing for rfactor are the open wheel cars, you can find several f1 mods from several years, from 60s to 2000s, recently released a 2010 mod with codemasters cars and ISI physics, really impresive.
Also rfactor have rally/dirt physics (not like RBR) also you can find a mod with wrc 2010 models from the last game.

And i must say you can try my mod with forza 3 cars, pretty generic, my first one, Cars of the Century, is in f1 classic also.

And for the last, both have day/night cycle, you can choose any day time and the time acceleration, and GTR2 has rain with working wipers, rfactor only have wet physics but no rain.

👍

OK so in the end, which one do you guys think I should go for?
I'm really trying to decide on the right game.
Which one is better for racing online?
And if I were to go for the GTR series, do I want GTR 2 or GTR Evo?

And if I were to go for the GTR series, do I want GTR2 or GTR Evo?
That depends on your pc's specs and what kind of detail/frame rates you'll be happy with

GTR2 being older, requires less of a pc to get the best out of it

Well, I've checked and it appears that I have the right specs for Evo, so would I want to go for that?

Try booth, GTR2 and GTR Evo are pretty similar, the second one is a little bit more into "racing for everyone" category but it is still a sim, of course. I think booth games NEED to be played at 60fps. Everything less wouldn't be enough to enjoy the superb physics. Before Nov 24th I was playing GTR2 but I wasn't able to keep 60fps rock solid. Frame drops are particualry bad in this kind of games because of the amount of data physics engine need to move. Now with some slightly adjustment to video setting I'm able to keep 60fps all the time (I've reduced the number of cars in track from 30 to 16 and decreased some irrilevant details in shadows). Today I've raced at Oschesleben with a Porsche GT3-RS and I was saying "WOW" every 20 seconds :D

So now what has better online play.
If I wanted to join a series or tournament, which one should I go for?
Which one allows more cars on the track at the same time?
rFactor, or one of the GTR games?
Which game has a better community?

Usually in pc sim-racing, people like to play more than 1 game, there are team of modders, which upload downloadable content and they could be booth interested into GTR and rFactor series. This are some sites all about pc sims:

http://www.nogripracing.com/

http://www.racesimulations.com/

this is the official site of Sim Bin (GTR series)
http://www.simbin.se/

this is rfactor central
http://www.rfactorcentral.com/

About online racing check nogrip forum, there is something going on there almost for every pc sims. GTR2 section: http://www.nogripracing.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=83

Sorry to GTP mods if I've posted all these links. But it's all about pc gaming.

also GTR4U is a great site (i forgot the link in my previous post)

rFactor hands down

Physics are a solid 10/10 for most of the higher rated and higher downloaded mod packs
Game runs flawlessly on my crappy Pentium 4 single core lol...

rFactor hands down
GTR2 use rFactor engine, and it's a specialized mod for GT racing. Booth games are great, choosing one of them will depend on the computer spec. With my laptop GTR2 seems to be lighter than rFactor
I have a Dual Core Duo P8700, hard disk 500GB, memory 4GB, and a quite weak grapic card still able to run it 1280x1024 at 60fps.

I personally prefer SIMBIN titles over rfactor in my experience. The only thing I feel GTR2 has over GTR Evo is dynamic day/night cycles. Everything else from GTR 2 can be added through mods for GTR Evo. Since GTR Evo is newer than GTR 2, online pickup races should be more plentiful with more people playing. If you are looking for series races that wont matter as you can find series races and organised races via the internet. I like race2play.com to find races for several games.

Hopefully this helps you out and I hope your PC racing adventure is fun for you. Its always good to see another person getting involved in PC racing sims. You won't be disappointed if you are looking for a more realistic racing experience compared to console racing.

I am starting to get informed about PC sim racing. I like touring cars, so was directed to Race 07, but don't see It mentioned a lot here. Is It a good choice ?

To be honest, I am lost with all these titles. I would like to give PC Sims a try, but don't want to invest yet, is that even possible with a 3 year old lap top ?
Race 07 sounds a few years old, so I expect It to run on that laptop. I have a G25 (connected to the PS3). Is that game still being played online, and modded ? Any hints ? Other PC titles for touring cars ? I really would like to run a touring car on Zandvoort !

Thanks !

If you want to see how these Sims will run on your laptop without laying down any cash, I suggest downloading the free Live for Speed demo. It should run fine with default settings on a 3yr old laptop though.
