Which should I opt for?

Well it's come to that point in time where I need to build my own PC. Right now I'm just getting together the individual parts I want, and then I'll make decisions based upon price and neccesity. Anyways, I was looking at CPU's and have been mainly looking at Athlon 64s and Pentium 4s. My question is: would it be smarter to have 1600MHz of Bus Speed, but 2.20 GHz Processor Speed (Athlon), or to have 800MHz of Bus Speed, and 3.40 GHz of Processor Speed (Intel)? Basically, will the extra 1.2 GHz help me more than having twice the Bus Speed?

I heard that Athlon 64s are a lot better than P4's. The P4 is only a 32 bit chip, It cannot outperform a 64bit chip. Try here http://pcmech.com and go to the forums. They can help you.

Well the Socket 939 came in recently and the 3500+ is just below $500.

I think it would be better to start with the price you want to pay for the computer.

edit: What is it going to be for?

My (without my current biased) opinion would say the Athlon 64.. Ask Jordan, he'll agree Im sure ;)

What operating system will you be running? A 32-bit or a 64-bit OS? Why buy a Porche if you can only drive 55 mph.....?

This will basically be my computer that I'll do all of my games/art on. I'm not sure which OS I'll be running. Would a 64-bit chip be worthless with Windows? I would love to run Linux, but I'd like to build a separate computer, solely for Linux later on. Price isn't an issue, either.

Your not going to see the benifits of the Althlon 64 bit processor until Windows releases a 64-bit version that can support that chip. Linux has a release out now that will take full advantage of the extra power of the 64-bit processing, except....linux probably doesn't have the titles (Graphic programs and Video Games). A lot of people are buying into the marketing hype of Buy Now, and wait for the Operating system.....

Fact is...why pay for that extra umph, if you can't see the umph now. If you waited until you could actually utilize the 64-bit chip, the prices would be much lower....and cost/performance ratio's start looking a whole lot better..
